  • Is Something Wrong With A Black gi?

    Okay People listen up..

Lately, my sensie has been bugging me to buy a juijitsu gi because im the only one whos training in normal clothes ok? So i went to this store & i bought the most awesome gi i could find. It was a black juijitsu gi. Then i went to class. When i put it on my sensie told me i cant wear a black gi. I asked why? He told me that in Silat, People who wear black gis & a white belt are consedered a 3rd belt there because in silat the white belt is the 3rd kyu or something like that. So he said he doesnt want the Silat people to see me & think that im a Silat 3rd kyu.
I think thats just stupid. We are juijitsu, not silat, so i was forced to go back to the store and exchange it for a white gi.

    ok; what do you think?

My Sensei would not let me wear a Black Ghi until I was a Brown Belt. In traditionalist it symbolizes rank, fighting prowness and it is frowned upon by many instructors. Especially Asians. They don't want beginners wearing Black Ghis.

LHW, there's no such thing as a dumb question...but there are silly ones

Just do as your instructor asks of you and don't fret over formalities.

I take it everyone else has a white Gi, so I 'm wondering what makes you as a beginner want to stand out in class?
Unless everyone else in your class also has a colored Gi then I see no reason why you could not wear a black one other than the same club/school also having Silat lessons
Now I would say Silat people do not wear a Gi certainly not one that would be suitable for jujutsu so the difference should be clear

3rd Kyu is brown belt in most systems. Actually 3rd degree brown.
