  • Decline in the Traditional: Finding a Judo School

I started training in judo when I was in high school and have stayed with the same group when I moved up to college. As my friends in the dojo have started to graduate and move away, I have occasionally run across them again and asked them about their training.

I have now been told the same thing by multiple graduated friends of mine. When they move away from our college, they have trouble finding another dojo that teaches judo and/or ju jitsu. All of them have told me they can find a number of BJJ, MMA, or striking arts all day long, but no judo or ju jitsu.

I was wondering if any of you have had similar troubles finding places to train after relocating. I do not want to graduate and move away if I can't find a new dojo. Has anyone else noticed a decline in older more traditional arts?

I trained Judo at my university (hoping to start up again come September) - I'm a mature student, but classes are open to the public. There are a few other clubs in greater Vancouver. The university also has a JJJ class.

As far as traditional martial arts go, there are plenty of clubs in my city. The problem is once you start working full time, training may cease to be a priority. This is especially true if you have to travel for more than 30 minutes or so for training.

Plenty of judo schools in UK, however BJJ schools are limit, and mma even more limited. However unfortunately popularity will eventually have them in every leisure centre, taught by dubious people.
