  • Why are Judo schools so often sensitive about working No Gi?

I think it really sucks that so many Judo schools have an attitude if you want to learn to throw No-Gi as well.

We have a couple of local Judo schools, at least one of them is awesome.. But they get very defensive and very..irritated if you want to learn no-gi.

I think that is a shame. Judo rocks. I typically recommend Judo to people who don't have the time to study MMA. I think Judo is the next best thing (and not by a long shot, either.)

But I don't want to learn Judo because of the dependence on the Gi at my local schools.

I think more Judo schools should be more flexible and start teaching more no-gi and working more without the gi.

I think it would make the throws even cleaner when they brought the gi back into play.

-Personally, I think everyone should learn no-gi first, and then learn with the gi.

a lot of judo schools are focused primarily on competing, and adhere to competition rules. when i trained in judo i used to get pissed cause every time we would start grappling some mthrfcker would come over and say " get up guys, you already got an ippon, why are you still on the ground??? start over" things like that. i didnt like that at all. training in bjj is better, as there are way less restrictions.

      Obi Otoshi...

IF you ever get past the traditional gripping of the Gi it will become less of an issue for you.

There are many ways to ADAPT the leverage, pushing, pulling, balance and footwork against opponents regardless of atire.

For instance... Take Obi-otoshi. You don't need the Gi or the belt if he has a strong waistband, pants or shorts...

I've found that some Judoka never really get past the most basic grips and throws. Or they get STUCK in thinking something must be done just so... They get BOXED IN to a WRONG attitude about Judo.

There is a fine example of this limited thinking...

The basic instruction is seriously lacking, inconsistent or just wrong.

"won't work w/out the Gi"? BS!!

Your fingers must point up not down... (?) (PHUI!)

Step in to his side, push the head, pull the Obi.

      Or.

pull the obi, push the head, step into position...

I'd like to choke this guy with his own Obi...

      LOL

      Just THINK!

"Will this throw work with a chop to the trachea and fistful of scrotum?"

Bodhi, why not just study Greco-Roman wrestling? For all practical purposes, it's pretty much no-gi judo minus submission holds. Just my two cents, J~
