  • Help with Judo

I think this should be in the BJJ forum, but this happened in a Judo school.

I was there in a trial class. One of their students got me involved. He had taught me some crude grappling but convinced me to go to the dojo. Anyway, they put me up against another first timer. It did'nt go well. I got the guy in a back mount after things went to the ground. I immediately realized he was stronger than me.Tried a rear naked choke. Didn't work. He grabbed my hand and pulled and I couldn't get proper position. Kept that up until I tried an armbar. He slipped out, tried a front mount. I got him into a guard. He started slamming me into the mat (is that allowed? it should be)! I held on and then tried a leg triangle choke! Didn't work so I tried an armbar again. Big mistake. The guy knee barred me. I slipped out. He back mounts me. I get scared and tap out. The sensei noticed that. Now I've gotta practice back mount escape like hell along with regular classes...extra time for me.

What mistakes did I make? I got other questions coming up.

        Humility

Honestly, I wasn't there. Didn't see you grapple and have no idea what you may have done better.

Now, having said that I'd like to offer this mild observation?

You were paired off with another unranked player and failed to define your attempts to submit him.

What you COULD take from THIS is a taste of humility. Swallow your pride and do your back mount escape drills!

Personally I think you did okay for a newb. The biggest mistake I see (frequently) is guys struggling to finish a technique even after they've lost the proper position to apply it... You moved on to another technique. Good on you.

Pride? Whats Pride? But good advice on the positioning.
