  • Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu

So I've been studying Shorin Ryu Jujitsu (Ken Penland's lineage) does anybody know this lineage and explain the history to me. I haven't been able to find much and I've heard some interesting stories of this system.

Yea I thought it would do better here in the Japanese forum rather than the RBDS forum.

Truthfully I did other martial arts before this one and never bothered knowing the history. I just met somebody a few months ago that came down another lineage branch and I wasn't sure what to think because Ken Penland claimed to be an Aiki jujitsu grandmaster. Needless to say my eyebrow raised at that time.

Does he have a website we can check out? Basically Japanese jujitsu should include strikes, wristlocks, throws, armbars, breakfalls and some stick or sword training. Post a link for us when you get a chance.

No, he died of cancer last year or the year before. I could look him up on Wiki and yes, it does have all those.

Check that I mispelled the name of the system (I suck) It is Shorinji Ryu.

I visited the website. Out of repect for the deceased I will go mild on my comments. I think the only reason he is called a grandmaster is because he founded his own system. Lots of people found their own systems and appoint themselves grandmaster. As far as being a legitimate grandmaster you would have to study the lineage. In other words who are his teachers and his teachers teachers. Also, he died at the age of 59, Jujitsu is so complex that most grand masters are very up in age, not saying that it's imposible but highly unlikely.

The system has a lot to offer you so just go for it and learn as much as you can. Most people this day and age get a black belt then they branch out and start crosstraining in other systems.

It is a repectful school and a repectful website. Enjoy the journey.

Oh, I'm on the same page as you are. I've met Mr. Penland several times. Nice guy but I'm really curious about the systems origins.

I just left the history page and the system seems to be legit. They are members of the AJA and several other organizations. Check out this site AJA - Home Page. The origin is Classical Jujitsu and Judo. It is a legit Ryu. Stop worrying so much about the origin and go to class and work. The way of the warrior is practice, daily practice.

                            Here's an interesting one:

Amazon.com: Eight Deadly Samurai Sword Cuts of Miyamoto Musashi Vol. 1: George Alexander: Movies & TV

Mr Penland never studied Niten Ichi-ryu. The contents of the DVD are completely made-up.

For the first time on DVD Mushasi's sword style has been expertly shown.A treasure to own.

                            Product Description
Miyamoto Mushashi is the most famous samurai swordsman of all time. His sword system thought to be lost, has been re-discovered and filmed on this DVD. Volume one of the three volume set shows his eight deadly cuts, fighting techniques plus rare two-sword style kata. The histiory of the style as well as warm ups, basics & kamae are also expertly demonstrated. If you are a sword practioner or enthusiast you have to buy this DVD.
The system never was lost. It is a proud tradition that continues to this day with an unbroken lineage back to Musashi himself.

If Mr Penland can 'create' something such as this, I would be concerned about taking other elements of his school at face value - but that's just me.
