  • Results from SBGI JKD, BJJ Seminar in Wisconsin

    Hey everyone,

Just wanted to give you a heads up on the seminar we recently had here in Madison, Wi. Paul Sharp midwest regional director for Straight Blast Gym International. I had trained one on one with Paul prior to this seminar and let me tell you Paul will be a quarterly favorite at my academy.
We started of by shadow boxing and a light stretching warm up. We then all gloved up and started working different elements of our boxing game. Paul was explaining how to train alive with out having to get injured and how elminate flinching in sparring. After different boxing drills that all had a sparring type mode to them he moved on to showing us the crazy monkey. The crazy monkey in awesome in the fact that it helps limit hits you take from some one who has faster hands than you. Off of the crazy monkey which we train in many different ways Paul started teaching us the clinch. Let me tell you if you ever meet Paul you will know why he teaches clinch at Matt Thorntons annual camps. Paul in absolutely a phenom in the clinch. We started off by working hand fighting. Then moved into passing and taking the opponents back. Paul also showed us a triangle choke in the clinch by using your arms. Off of the clinch he showed how to take people down or to neck crank, choke and control some one in the clinch range. THis clinch was truely awesome and evolutionary. Finally we hit the mats and started working the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Paul showed us different things to do to wrestler who constantly is trying to over power your guard. Besides all the techniques Paul showed us he really knew how to break it down for all of us to understand. I think if you are a Jkd instructor or student that you should for sure check out the new generation on JKD as taught by the straight blast gym. I am super excited to keep furthering my education with Paul and starting to incorporate there stuff in my organization. So heads up that i am hoping to get involved with bringing straight blast gym curriculm to Wisconsin. Besides training Paul himself is awesome and is becoming a good friend of mine. We had set the seminar up for 3 hours and Paul ended up teaching 4 1/2 hours at no additional charge. Where can you beat that!!

    Thanks everyone take care,

Are you still doing the PFS thing too? How does the SBG curricilum compare to RAT? In a streetfight, specifically.

        Thanks, Aaron

          YO Guys,

Of course i am still doing the PFS stuff also. It was just a different way of looking at things. I think both organizations are functional and I respect both in the same way. In fact i think i am going to combine the PFS material with the Straight Blast material to make my organization better. I love the art of Jeet Kune Do and am constantly expanding my organization. Both are equally good to me. If you guys have other questions feel free to ask. Otherwise happy holidays.

          Take care,

          Mike Vaughn

how can you combine both material when in actually one comes from another? if i study and learn how to make toothpaste from one company, then go out and make my own toothpaste and maybe add 1-2 ingredients. then, can i say that i have created my own toothpaste and maybe do some propaganda by adding my toothpaste has a livelier taste? i would think that i should give credit where credit is due. thats all. or i'm i wrong?

              "or i'm i wrong?"

You are completely wrong on a number of levels. PFS does what it does, we do what we do.

To discover the distinctions, and there are many, you would actually have to step foot into an SBGi Gym at some time, take one class, or attend a training session. You might even try meeting an SBGi coach at some point. All that will really help your clarity on the issue.

If, or when, you ever do that there will be no reason to explain any of the distinctions as they will all be self evident.

If you are curious as to what we do, check it out for yourself.

              Have a good week.

              -Matt Thornton

I've never met Mr. Thornton, however, I have a few of the SBGI videos. Being unbiased, I think both are great systems, but the SBG stuff really blew me away and opened my eyes. "Aliveness" is the key word, with alot of meaning behind it.
