If I may presume to offer my opinion, I think that what Matt and Burton are saying is that the name JKD is meaningless, it is the application that is important. It does not matter what it is you practice if you are not training it in the alive manner with resisting oponents under stress you simply do not know if your system is effective or not. Their background is JKD as well as other things so their system reflects some of the ideas incorporated in JKD. Whether you believe JKD is a set system or a philosophy is not important. If I were to be able to take TKD and develop it in such a way that out system consistently defeated the people at SBG then they would attempt to learn why they were being beat. If this new system proved superior they would change what they are doing to that which is superior. This could be the same with any other style or system. The are measuring the system on performance. The simple truth in life is that if you have not done it you cannot say with certainty that it works. So people who have learned JKD, Karate, TKD, BJJ and have not tested it under alive circumstances cannot possibly know for certain that what they know will be viable under stress.

Bruce wanted to create a system that was based on effectiveness. What he found effective he labled JKD. As bruce found things that were better that became JKD. To further this concept is to change what JKD is. As more effective means of training are discovered they are added to JKD. If things are found to no longer work they are discarded. Much like when everyone knows the defense to a technique the technique starts to suffer in practice. It is no longer trained because it no longer works.

My question is that are techniques that work on average untrained individuals being thrown out simply because they fail against people who are trained in them.

      eXcessiveForce,

I understand about guaging the effectiveness of the arts. I see this as more to do with common sense than anything else. No art has an exclusive on effectiveness. Not JKD, MMA, TKD, etc.

My question to Burton has to do with his analogy to the basketball team. The implication is that all JKD "teams" have not been playing "real JKD" until he and Matt came along. I don't think Burton meant it this way, but it sure came across to me that way. I've read many of Burton's articles and posts and he almost always comes across respectful and yet states his opinion. I can't believe he would take such an egotistical position, so that's the reason I wanted to clear it up.

      Matt stated on another forum:

If a delivery system or set of techniques cannot be shown to be functional under the pressure of aggressive resisting fighters, and yet one stays attached to it because it was "bruce lee's" or "traditional" etc, then you are simply attached to a method for reasons other then function. . .and that is a TRAP.
This is very true and many are caught in this "trap". Of course there are some who simply want to preserve what Bruce Lee taught.

      eXcessiveForce, you stated:

I think that what Matt and Burton are saying is that the name JKD is meaningless, it is the application that is important.
If this is true, then why use the name JKD at all?

Matt stated in regards to Bruce Lee:

Whether or not it's actually what he did is not relevant...
I'm having a little trouble with this statement. Matt is the first to invite people to come and prove the effectiveness of physical techniques. But he says it's not important if Bruce Lee actually applied his own philosophy?

Matt, could you explain this a little more?

I believe Burton's game was a reference to fighting not JKD. The idea being people are Playing JKD (fake fighting) not fighting.

As for using the name JKD. If the base is JKD then isn't it still JKD. BJJ is still JJ. And if you consider JKD the process then adaption towards functionality is JKD.

            Moma News,
I listed Matt and myself because Matt had started the thread and I had been mentioned. Specifically, what I mean to say is that ANYONE who trains with real resistance (as opposed to contrived resistance as found in many drills from various styles) will enhance their fighting skills and truly know what works and doesn't work for them. The particular style does not matter as you can take any system and train it devoid of resistance, thus creating someone who is more of a caddy than a professional golfer. He carries the tools around and knows what they are for, but can't really use them himself. Aloha!

              greetings,
what are dead drills? would mook jong applications, be considered as dead drills to you or those who are ( been ) making load comments with this method of training? or is numerada, sumbrada, serrada, etc. the supposed dead drills? is it certain instructors or camps or individuals that are well known?

Roz, that's not for Burton to answer. If your curious as to what drills work then go learn an alternative method yourself, and do a comparison. Then, base your belief on an actual comparison made, and viewed, by your own self.

If your sure what you do already works exactly as well as you want it to, then why ask the question?

If your not sure, and sincerely want to make a comparison, then why not re-phrase the question in such a way as to find out how Burton trains. Otherwise it's obviously leading and contrived.

Leave the talking about "organizations", or specific personas to the dorky martial arts gossip queens, where it belongs. One is always better served when sticking to questions and research about training methods.

                Enjoy the day
                -Matt Thornton

No they are not. However, we have found that techniques that work well on trained fighters also work even better on people who are not trained fighters.

Plus, they have the added advatage of not requiring a dangerous assumption on the users part, when they may indeed be in defense of their own life.

It's just like training Moma News. If I don't get good feedback I can't get better.
Roz, the key is resistance, someone fighting your technique so that you learn how to apply against someone who is fighting back. I agree with Matt that the best thing to do is to try the different training methods yourself then see what gives the best results. Also, training with resistance is really fun!

Hey Matt, When are you coming over here to Hawaii again? I was bodyboarding Waimanalo yesterday in 80 degree weather. Three miles of beach with only about 20 people. Aloha!
