  • Jeet Kun Do VS Muay thai Boxing?

Wondering which one would most likely win in a match in a ring?? How about in a street fight? Just curious.... I just started taking Muay Thai for about a month and my buddy just started taking Jeet Kun Do... We each think our own MA is better than each others... opinions..?

I also have a friend who is taking JKD, from my understanding it utilizes aspects of Muay Thai, but doesn't centralize on it... So from that stand-point, I would say that JKD has an advantage in a NHB scenario...

However, two fighters being equal, one training in JKD and the other in MT for a Muay Thai fight, ofcourse the MT guy will win because his training is specific to that event.

JKD fighters do not limit themselves to this thing we call JKD.

Greg Nelson (Ever heard of him?) is one of the best JKD guys in the country (USA) certified under Dan Inosanto. He is also Sean Sherk's trainer. Sherk fought in the UFC and is now fighting in Pride.

Greg Nelson is also one of the best Muay Thai instructors in the country.

And Dan Inosanto has been training Muay Thai for a couple of decades now. He is the Vice President of the Ajarn Chai's association.

Erik Paulson is definitely a JKD guy, last I heard he was still training every week with Guro Inosanto, and he's one of the early NHB guys (the first American to win a title in Japan). He mixes Muay Thai and Savate for striking (calls the remix of styles STX Kickboxing for Savate Thai X-training . . . or something like that) and has recently been training Ken Shamrock (to be fair Ken is working with several people) for his return to the Octagon.

JKD is so much more than Pak Sao Lap Sao Pak Sao Lap Sao . . .

JKD gives you the framework to find what works best for you. So the question "Which is better?" never really works with JKD because JKD will adapt to and absorb anything that might come along and happens to be more effective than what was there before.

My school teaches MT initially and combines it with JKD techniques later, so the striking art you learn is a combination of both.

I just wanted to add that when one talks about JKD they need to be more specific because there are many interpretations of the art.

          So to clarify.

OJKD doesn't incorporate Muay Thai because Bruce Lee was unimpressed with the way the thai's fought. So he didn't include Muay Thai into his training or his teachings.

JKDC under Dan Inosanto does employ Muay Thai as well as other arts into their repertoire.

So when one says that JKD incorporates Muay Thai then they are only partly right.

Not sure if you want my view but you deserve since we frequent a couple of forums.

I see both sides of the coin BUT there should not be a OJKD or a JKDC. They are both incomplete without the other. Theres hardliners for this side and that side but its all relative.

If they need to be stuck on a name they could try Original Jeet Kune Do Concepts

I think your heart is in it and I know where you go congregate online and thats why I'm letting you know how I feel. neither side is right and both are incomplete without each other. There shouldn't be a division between them.

Bruces own words say it best.

"If people say Jeet Kune Do is different from "this" or from "that," then let the name of Jeet Kune Do be wiped out, for that is what it is, just a name. Please don't fuss over it."

Good journeys to you on your path to freedom.

              akja,

It would be cool if all JKD adhered to the same principles and everyone got along. The politics behind JKD sometimes get's out of hand. But the fact remains that there are different interpretations of JKD. For someone to say JKD is this or JKD is that they need to make the distinction of which brand they are referring to. OJKD doesn't incorporate Muay Thai while JKDC does. If you prefer, you could say some practitioners use Muay Thai in their JKD and some don't.

I wanted to make the point so that we don't mislead any novices into believing that JKD is one single solidified style where everyone adheres to the same principles.

Yes, JKd tools can come from Thai or other arts depending on the fighter. It's at theat exact time of execution that "we" decide how we will react, without thinking.

We can't plan it, we jusr do it. But Jun Fan is at the base. the confusion comes from wrong interpetations. Nobody is completely wrong or completely right.

Theres nothing wrong with "moving on" from the "base" but don't skip the base. No art lets their practitioners start at the "end." And thats exactly whar they're doing by skipping the Jun Fan.

The "process" works. If followed correctly "freedom" is the result.

Stop that. Making sense doesn't get you anywhere.

Jeet Kune Do is not a style; it is a way of fighting that doesn't limit itself to any styles...

Jeet Kune Do is not a style. It is a philosophy. You can be a Muay Thai fighter and also use Jeet June Do.

Ive never heard of that but I wouldn't be suprised if it was true since bruce was so much into philosophy himself. I'll have to research that.

Anyways, to get back on topic, obviously one is going to say that there style is better then another :P. The only styles that I really is Karate or umm Tae Kwon Do. I think that a JKD fighter would defenitly beat a Muay thai fighter because there style is LIMITED. They do not go into other styles and take there moves and use it to beat an oppenent. JKD is not limited theres always ways to improve it and it is always being improved !!
