  • Starting with JKD

Hey all, I just finished an introductory level of JKD as my first formal training with any kind of fighting technique. I really enjoyed it and plan to continue on with it as far as I can go. One thing that I noticed is that on some level I seemed to do better than people who had previously trained in another art. Perhaps becuase there arent any techniques that I have to unlearn. However, I'm wondering if the fact that I have no formal backround is a good thing or not? Would it have been better start with something else and then study JKD? Is there anything I should watch out for or pay attention to because I dont have any backround?

        Jkd

        Hey there

I was just curious as to what you covered in your first class, do they teach other arts at your gym as well?

I train at JKD school as well. We have quite a few people there that had years of experience in other arts. My personal experience with them has been that they started training in JKD for a couple of reasons, boredem, they saw holes in their first arts, or politics. I also had no experience in other arts when I first started in JKD. It will give you a good base, and more that likely give you exposure to other arts that you can explore further if you find something that peaks your interest.

The class I took was out of my gym at school. The instructor was from a studio in china town which also does Kali. The acctual gym I was at has just about any MA I could want to take BJJ, TKD, Karate, Kung Fu, Boxing, Kick Boxing etc. So would be pretty easy for me to look into other classes.

In the class we did pretty much the basics. Foot work, maintaining the center line. The basic hooks and lead punches and kicks, and the five ways of attack.
