  • Sow choi?

    Hello,

What do you think of sow choi? It's a kung fu punch where the mostly straight arm follows the same line as an overhead punch and hits with the inner forearm or fist. It may be a little wide for jkd standards but I like the fact that you're not coming down on someone's head with your knuckles, less chance of injury to your hand.

Not many have a clue what you are talking about. You might want to rephrase your question with english terminology (so chuie = quarter swing in JKD), but that probably wouldn't do you much good either.

I think it's a good tool when you have the opportunity to use it, perhaps against a stunned opponent or someone who is vulnerable along his periphery, but my favorite version is the finger fan. The so chuie is manifest in four technqiues as I recall: w/ the back of the fist, w/ the palm, w/ the fingers and w/ the fist itself. As you mentioned, the forearm can be used as well for closer quarters. The two camps that I know of who use some incarnation of this tool are choi lay fut and savate (le swing). How they use it may be of some benefit in your use.
