  • Jkd begginner seeking training advice

hi, I have been training in Jeet kune do for a couple of months now and felt that i needed a wider range for my training so i have also started Jujutsu and kickboxing. I live in a small town in the UK and there isnt too many arts available in the area, i thought these two would compliment my jkd training better than tang soo do, tae kwon do and karate which are also available in my area. I would really appreciate any advice training tips and opinions anyone could give me that would help further my training.

    Cheers guys

    Lee

Well, for starters, how is the initial jkd training going? If you are having to go elsewhere for kickboxing and bjj, then is your guro, or sifu under guro dan? or sifu taky kimura?

Welcome to the forum! I like the JKD and have spent a few years learning the concepts of the intercepting fist. I have found that the emphasis on range and mobility compliment just about any fighting style. Particularly the academic study of fighting theory. If you study the 5 "ways" of attack for instance the simplicity of each can be applied in so many combinations and from so many different types of fighter that there is no end to the variety. The art comes in understanding and actually knowing what a person can do before they know what they will do. Not just hitting them on their preparation to attack but attacking the psychological decision making process before they start DOING anything. (destructive)

If you're taking JKD, then kickboxing should be part of your training already.

Mr. Tackett! Wow, nice to see you here. Interesting tool this internet, eh? My son studied with one of your students. Hal Faulkner. It's a small world after all!

              Most respectfully.

Like others have already said, if you are taking JKD you should be going over all four ranges of fighting at some point and weapons as well. But by all means, if you are interested in taking "martial arts" go for it. The whole point of JKD is not to be bound by any one fighting style. If you go to the other classes, do just like Bruce said, take the stuff that works and discard the rest; that way you can't go wrong.

Gosh darnit, Tim. I am interested in the following about how to fight Brent Lance, one of your students. Tim, you did well teaching him. I can't seem to penetrate him effectively. He's taught too well. You must have to do something do stop him from being unstoppable. You Wed. Night JKD guys have great training methods, you're open, not money-hungry, and even give guys with experience lots of fits. Keep up the good work. I think people should make sure to know that you're out there and good to train with. Here's what I put about Brent: Hello, just wondering how to fight these JKD guys with traditional martial arts. Sparring them makes me want to learn more about the style, which I've been studying since last year. Can't use blocks, traditional kicks seem too telegraphic. Do sweeps and throws work? They are mean, nasty fighters. Don't know if practicing katas will improve anything useful against them. Jump spinning kicks will get one creamed against these guys. They are too fast and dangerous. Better to just cheat and tie 1 hand and 1 leg behind their back and then fight them. When I sparred Brent and his buddies in January it was impossible to use standard TKD kicks with
the 2-step chamber and kick instead of just kick out and neutralize my kicks and beat me to the punch, which they did often. Sometimes it make me feel like all the years of traditional training need to be thrown out or at least abandoned when I spar these guys. I've got to figure out what works against these guys and learn it so I can bring it back to the traditional guys and show them what really works. I hate how the exaggerated, powerful chamber of the TKD and karate stuff sometimes seems too telegraphic. Even the punches can't be loaded up 'cause the JKD guys will beat you there with the straight blasts, and blocking might as well be thrown out the window. Got to block/strike as a fusion technique, no 1, then 2. Just all at once.

I just hope people recognize you, Tim, and Bob Bremer's knowledge base on JKD and how to fight guys effectively. Hopefully people will give you due credit. It's great learning from such awesome teachers.

BTW don't let people intimidate you.

Funny story a lad, called Josh, i was training with and he had to through a punch and i would catch it then shoulder roll (i think that was it) and kick at the same time. He said to me:
Josh: "You best watch out i like to go fast i wouldn't like to hurt you."
Me: "Sure go at whatever speed you want"
because im new he thinks he is better then me and he bases all his MA ability around speed.
So i focused on the centre of his chest and circled him and it was just obvious when he was about to attack. Lol and his punch was soo weak well lets say he didn't hurt me at all. He got so frustrated he kept saying "Im gonna turn up the speed now" i was just like "Whatever just shut up and train". He got so annoyed that he told me to stop circling him lol because before he would attack he would stand still so it was obvious that when he stood still he was gonna attack lol.

Lol even his 15 count drill is a blur, our instructor said "Right josh do that again, but not as fast because it isn't effective at that speed you are getting it wrong"

Hal Faulkner is a great guy and good friend. We do more sharing of info than my teaching him. I'm glad your son had the chance to train with him. I know that he teaches BJJ as well as JKD.
