As trapping is considered a by product of hitting A person needs to train and think in that line. If you can hit you will not need to trap. If the arm /hand needs to be removed to be able to hit. you trap. And yes it can work . But like I said you never trap to just trap.. The saying hit hit and hit trap then hit some more.

Good answer Robert.
Like what he said, trapping can be very effective when it's needed. If you're trapping just to trap, you could leave openings for the opponent if you miss. Trap when it's needed, and if you're in that close of a range, then start going for elbows, knees, and headbutts

I only use trapping when someone puts a barrier in front of my attack. Trapping is like changing a tire. You don't just change you tire to show everyone how good you are at changing a tire. You change it when you need to. Same way with trapping, only do it when you have to. The trapping from kali that i've used in sparring is the foot trap. If i manage to get inside i use knee's and the punyo but i've never really used like balintawak type trapping though.

i take wing chun, and trapping is essentially a by-product of deflecting and hitting. We absorb the hit hit with one of our hand tech. and hit a split second later.
Trapping occurs afterwards, if u need it at all. The intial deflection and hit will prob. stun the attacker leaving him open.
The key thing about trapping is u have to be very quick in order to apply it to a resisting opponent, that is y we hit first, and thats also y wing chun isn't that good for point-system fightign tournaments.

I use do it off an entry of some kind. To do the foot trap you should put your whole foot on his foot, you should just use the ball of your foot on the opponents toe or instep.Try pushing some gently when you have them in a proper foot trap, they can't go anywhere except down.Pretty cool stuff.

Actually as time goes on I prefer clinching to WC trapping. I can't say enough about the Thai clinch, and I'm really interested in the SBG Greco stuff. The last time I trained with my instructor we did alot of knife stuff in that range.
Thanks!

Does anyone do Sil Lim Tao?

What would be a good book or video source for investigating Silat or anything I might not have seen? I'm trying to keep an open mind, though I have my favorites. I probably won't see my Sifu 'till '06,as I'm recovering from a (completely,as in severed) torn achilles tendon! It's a 5 hour drive as it is...
