  • bruce Lee jkd elbows and the double end ball bag

lee only touches on this breifly in 1 of his books so what kind of(especially double end bag) drills do jkd people do to develop their elbow strike?

Heavy bag works for me. Elbow strike is more of a power shot thus I prefer the heavy bag to the timing {double end} bag.

lee thought thought it was worth doing so....
also wouldn't it be worth trying/good to mix punches and elbows with good timing on the double end bag????

Who am I to second guess the Great Bruce Lee. Whatever you want, just remember that those bags don't swing back thus you also need a sparring partner.

I dont do JKD, but I do practice elbow strikes on the double-end to practice distancing. The main problem is that they will all be horizontal strikes, no up/down strikes. Pretty simple really. Hit the bag with your right elbow, duck with your guard up, weave over a little and come up. ON the second revolution of the bag hit it with your left elbow. you want to time your strikes so that you are guarded and come up to hit at the same exact time that the bag comes around for the second revolution. That way its all timing...your not just standing there waiting. The bag will swing the other way now, as you duck/weave, rise up and hit it with your right elbow. You should also practice elbows on the Heavybag and wherever else you can. At first its hard to find your timing and distancing, but after practice its almost too easy. I may be doing it wrong, but I'm doing it.

My old jkd instructor would do elbows on the speed bag. In the middle of speed bag work he would throw the elbow then backhand and keep going without interrupting the rythm.
