Could someone give me a good overall explaination of this drill? I have heard a lot about, but I have not been able to gather enough info.

    Sumbrada

    Hi,

Sumbradas are counter for counter drills from the Filipino Martial Arts. The term itself means to shade or shadow (think sombrero). The sumbradas I have learned are prearranged drills using weaponary. When I say counter for counter, I mean... I attack- you defend, you attack-I defend, back & forth.... The drill is created so you do sequence "A" while your partner does sequence "B", then you partner does "A" to your "B", and you just keep going thru the sequences as long as you want with no real "end".

    Go to:

Go down to 5 Count Sumbrada Drilling and click to download a clip demoing sumbrada.

    Hope that helps...

Thanks you the info. It really helped a lot. Does Vunak go over a lot of this material on his PFS Streetfighting videos?

Something to be cautious of, HungryWolf, is getting lost in the drill (sumbrada, hubad lubad, or any other drill).

Once you've learned the drill, make sure to strike and counter with commitment. By commitment, I, of course, don't mean "lack of control." I mean put your strikes on-target and with enough energy to connect (though the connection doesn't have to be hard).

Too many people get lost in drills and they become patty-cake ... they lose all real value for both participants.

A tangent to this: the FMA (in my experience) teach drills, and techniques separately. Then, when both are down pretty well, they combine them. So, for instance, while doing a sumbrada pattern (after you've got the pattern down well), try to take a disarm or a joint lock, or a sweep, or an extra hit somewhere. Now your partner isn't giving you a "stem" to work on. He's not "letting" you do the technique. He'll still be trying to continue the drill. This helps improve your timing (among other things). It takes the techniques and the drills and moves them both a baby-step closer to the energy of a real fight.
