    are there any excercises, besides the obvoius practicing, you can do to increase your reaction time to an oncoming attack?

        I get what you are asking.

        Speed is an important part of reflex training, as is timing and distance. It all runs together. It's pretty hard to train one without training the others.

          best thing u can do is shadow box on your own. move in all directions, and come up with all kinds of combos. i like to shadow box after lifting heavy weights sometimes, just to workout a little more. theres always stuff to work on and u can do it alone while thinking about shit to yourself and whatnot.

            besides the obvious, speed bag, crazy ball, etc. as funny as it sounds for solo training I taught myself to juggle, I found it helped me develop timing, left/right coordenation, speed and hand-eye dexterity skills. footbag is good too for kicking and knee strikes.

              meditating?

              Well, there are ways to enhance your overal figthing abilities with meditation, but to do this, you must have a completely empty mind...

              And since it would take a great manny lessons, I doubt I can teach you any of it, try browsing the web...

                Great Question,
                I do something my first instructor called butterflies, it's a continous series of very fast arm circles (~20 sec.) in front of the chest (close) which flow into linear strikes (2 or 3 in different directions) and back into circles (~ 20 sec.) which again flow into strikes or pokes, you get the idea, do this for about 5 min. a day.
                The idea is to speed up the "Kenpo hands"!!
                The particular circles and strikes, how many of each and which direction is not important, just do it FAST and change rotation direction often.
                The most important thing is to FLOW

                    theres a few basic blocks we have, really simple, but efficient and reactive, certain ones a better versus certain punches, so we go up against someone, and with them only aiming to throw a straight punches (one that stop right before it hit you if worse came to worse with this drill) of various sorts, we work on getting the right block out at the right time, since all stem from the hands which are a little over a foot apart, you often confise them.

                    THe moral is, once you get it down and at faster speed, your reaction increases.

                      Reflex action comes and goes. The more you train towards uncontroled responce You maintain a faster reflex action. Controled responce gets where you may look good and respond well. BUT it is blended in action. Take a boxer he trains becomnes more able to respond then when training is relaxed a certion amount of the reflex action retards slows down. As the body adjusts to the need. And Mike did hit it right. A person sees thinks and does. And a balanced action on fo responce. From training methods. The better you see something coming and react to it the reflex action remains higher . A person starts out learning the basics. Then on to some kind of resistive training. sensitivitry drill let you feel and respond Which is good. Being alert and reacting comes better from steps into resistive training. light medium and fast. And as contact goes the same light contact medium contact. Builds good responce reflex action. And with a certion amount of contact you get to where you respond from being hit much better. But agin any time you speed up the reflex action. It will later retard as the need is less.

                          I've noticed that Zhan Zhuang standing helps me to increase fluidity of my movements and speed up my responses.
                          It's a complicated method, so you probably need instruction. Just try to find a Yi quan teacher. After you've learned the basics it's pretty easy to practise on your own.

                            It might sound funny but research shows that video games help reaction time. Another thing I do is when I am sitting at home watching TV I make fists with every frame change on commercials. Its kind of a fun game to play because of how many times the frames change in commercials.
