    alright
    heres the low down, im 18 and am looking to increase my body strength as much as possible without using weights. is it possible? all i have is a chinup bar and my hands for pressups. i can do quite a few chinups and pullups. could someone make like a routien out for me? sunday to thursday? i can do 50 chinups and fifty pullups each day. i am not a big guy either, quite thin but am unbeliveably strong for my size. any vitamins that are good to take which would help also? food? any help will be appreciated!

        Dime,
        I'm not sure what your MA background is, but most TMA'S (ALL?) have forms or katas. To some people, these are misunderstood as fruitless and irrelevent to self defense. I believe that by performing these with diligence, it helps the body to strengthen your muscles and connective tissue as well as helping to give you balance and coordination. Start slow with attention to
        proper technique and use dynamic tension along with diaphramatic breathing. If done correctly, you will notice a marked improvement in strength as well as speed and explosive power. I hope this helped.

              Try some isometric exercises. Your posting this in the JKD forum - check out the book Bruce Lee: The Art of Expressing the Human Body for more info.

              But take note of the warning here: http://www.isokinetics.net/basics/exercise.htm Isometrics can raise your blood pressure and can be very dangerous if you have an undiagnosed heart condition.

              But seriously, why are you adverse to weight training? You can be strong doing exercises that only use your body weight, but you can become much much stronger using progressive weight training. Your flexibility will NOT suffer if you stretch properly.

                And since this is in the JKD forum...

                Bruce Lee dismissed kata training as outdated - part of the "classical mess". Yes, doing kata can strengthen your connective tissues, but there are exercises that do a much better job of it. Isometrics for one.

                If you want to learn how to fight, do realistic combat drills, gradually increasing the level of resistance from your opponent/training partner.

                Kata is good for "self-pefection" - the art side of martial arts. But for the martial side, your time is much better spent shadow boxing in an "alive" manner, hitting the heavy bag, and hitting focus mits/thai pads, or actually sparring. And yes: lifting wieghts, doing squats, push ups, and crunches.

                  Of course it is possible to gain muscle with out weights. Push ups are great. I don't know how many you can do but they are great for upper body work. Do sets of maybe 25 reps. How many sets is up to you. Start out with eight. If that is easy, then change your "down time" in between your sets. Then put your handscloser together and you hit your triceps more. You can also put your feet up on your bed and do decline push ups. Squats are the best way to gain muscle. Lots of growth hormone is released when you squat. You don't need weight but it helps. If you can grab a small stack of text books and squat. If you have no books then keep your hands up in an "on guard" position near your face and squat staying on the balls of your feet the whole time. Each time you lose your balence (and you will) add five more. Squat balls to the floor, or as close as you comfortably can. Finally, for squats, you can try jump squats with no weight. Squat balls to the floor and leap up as high in the air as you can and then back down. Make sure you don't have any knee problems, though. Add more protein to your diet, also. Try about two grams per pound of body weight. As with all excersise, consult your doctor first.

                        These are brilliant conditioning exercises! Hindu squats are currently my favourite thing to do. And if you can find a sketch of them in Tao of Jeet Kune Do.

                          Don't be concerned with getting "bigger" -

                          Even using weights when I was in my late teens through early twenties -

                          I could not gain mass. My metabolisim (sp?) was too high.

                          Focus on your tendon and joint strength -

                          When you can afford it basic weight training will add muscle strength -

                          And as you get older the weight will come without a problem....

                          At 22 - 160's at 10% bodyfat

                          Now at 40 - 230's at 10% bodyfat

                            Hey Im not that expereinced. But dont eat to much meat. Increase in proteins like nuts and soy. Do sprinting it increases you kicking speed. If you want to practice footwork try to simulate it towards a real situation. If you take it seriously the mind is more attentive to it and the results are instantaaneous. I tried playing basketball. If you keep the distance and get closer to the opponent. as if you were fighting. Or just spar but If you are just starting out that will work very nice. Also for peripheral vision. And bursts. I would not be able to expalin this well but try variations in ab training. there your strenght will increase. laying on your back feet flat raise them up. and flatten in to your shoulder. at the same time bend your knees not to far and rotate them left or right then bring them in. Then go backtrack the same vay down. this will work out several muscles in the mid area. Make sure you transition smoothly as you do this. I suggest incorporating four other ways to train your abs, these are common. If you need them let me know. Take care Ps dont wait to much between excercises. Just rip it up quick And wait a couple of days
