  • A little Info please

I am new to the whole MA world. And I have a couple of questions. I have been doing some reseach on different styles and had some questions about JKD. I read somewhere that Bruce Lee shut down all his JKD schools because he did not like the idea of JKD being a MA style, and it went against the whole idea of JKD. If so, how is JKD still around, and how come there are so many "certified Instuctors" of JKD out there. Am I wrong, or just miss informed? From what I have read on previous post's, JKD sounds like one of the more practical styles. If I do decide to start studying, how would I find out if the instuctor is for real or just teaching crap.

JKD is still around. And as far as finding instructors, every style has that problem. I mean theres a lot of bullshit tae kwon do teachers and muay thai instructors. You gotta go to the class and ask around. Figure it out for yourself though. I went to a muay thai class once and it was pretty much cardio kickboxing The guys couldnt throw punchs and the instructor just sat there and said oh grab some pads and throw some kicks and punchs. After the class I told him he should take down the sign that he teaches Muay Thai. People still do teach JKD, one of my good friends has been taking it in Princeton, NJ and hes actually getting pretty good. Good luck bro.

I was thinking the same thing. You dont need teh instrctors. Just concepts and work on it yourself or a training partner. I have and its more interesting because you do things you wont learn in no school. As for proper timing no one can teach you that. That is about mental perception. Not skill. or mechanistic repetitions. Some get it some dont right away. Just work on it and spar to learn. If you think of it as defending yourself and realize that defense is offense and vice versa then you will learn it yourself. Even jkd from what iI see is becoming a repetetive process from some instructors and they charge way to much. Take care Ps I dont care for those schools they are narrow minded. Some instructors might be good but Bruce lee didnt believe in schools he shut them down becaause of that. they become an authority. Everyone only listens, they wont try anything for themselves.

Definately get a good instructor. Even if its someone you see once or twice a month. Make sure they have some type of creditials through one of the lineages, (there are several) or at least know that they trained with someone who has and you're confident in their knowledge. There are basics in movement etc., that you do need to learn. Having no form doesn't mean having "no form", so to speak.

Try reading in the archives right here and use the search function. There are a number of threads dealing with very similar issues. Training a bunch of styles and keeping what is usefull for you is never going to make you a "real" Jeet Kune Do man...

You might be an elite mixed martial artist but that's not JKD.

Read a book. Tim Tackett has written a few and he's also a forum member.

          All the best!
