How does one get JKD Instructor Certification by hosting seminars with JKD Instructors?

  • #2
Prof. Carter Hargrave of World Jeet Kune Do Federation makes Instructors by charging a fee for sale of his Videos. This is one way of getting certified at 300 $ stat fee!

With this certification, he grants free annual "membership" to the WJKDF. The Instructor certification is renewed annually provided you remain "a member" by paying 25 $ yearly.

Later, at times, he revokes the Certification without substantial reason. Like you not linking him to his site. In order to revoke your listing, he just needs to refuse you the next annual membership.

It is rumoured that he also wants his listed Instructors to get more students certified, in order to retain ones name in the Instructor listing.

You will find that many of his previously certified WJKDF Instructors on earlier listing have now disappeared from the latest list! This is a particular phenomenon with people from Europe owning Federations & Associations who donot wish to link him, so as to maintain traffic to their sites.

I think that you need to work with a qualified JKD teacher until you can both do it and teach it. This can't be done by buying videos or by learning in one weekend. If you could do it like that, then what would it really be worth?

MY JKD people, please listen to Tim. People forget that JKD is actually a Martial art and cant be learned from video because it involves physical training and not sitting on the coach with big dreams of building an ego with a certificate that holds no validity. Hargrave should be ashamed. Just think of of this way...If Bruce Lee was alive, do you think he would recognize those who claim to be instructors of his martial art through watching some videos???? I believe it would be more in line with total black ball from the JKD community with alerts in all martial arts magazines listing the frauds and their names.

          Just my thoughts.

Let's hope Tim, other 1st gens and their disciples continue keeping JKD alive. God only knows the video JKD instructors wont.

Why would you want a certificate?

It's one thing to have a document that states you've completed a certain level of proficiency in something. Like a HS diploma. It another thing to rent a document for a yearly fee that claims you're a member of some allegedly "elite" group of guppies...That's a scam!

Why would you want a black belt? Or red/ white stripes? Do you pay for those every year with hard currency or sweat and blood?

A JKD certificate is only going to be as good as the teacher that issues it and the training that underlies it. Some people may give a student a certificate after the student has trained for a very short period of time while others will give a student a certificate only after a substantial period of training time. The level of knowledge represented by the first certificate may be vastly different from the level of knowledge represented by the second certificate.

In some countries in Europe you have to have a certificate from a recognized instructor to be able to teach any martial art publicly. The sad truth is that you can buy it instead of earning it.

I suggest going to as many of Guro Inosanto’s seminars as possible. Make sure to introduce yourself and train hard. There are the paper mills teachers and then there are the instructors that have actually logged many hours training with the right people. Don’t rush yourself, take your time in this venture.

                      jkd in vidio?

Tim Tacket is right when he says you have to learn from a qualified instructor .You can't learn sesitivity ,timing or the way the hands should feel when you are doing it correctly from A vidio. People don't realise that JKD is an internal art taught by James and Bruce Lee...................

First, you need to ask yourself exactly why you wish to pursue a teaching certificate. Depending upon the answer, you may not need to be in a rush to acquire one and can take your time looking for an instructor
