As someone stated earlier, shooting in for a takedown is a good option. The Thai push kick is also good. Personally, I wouldn't try to deflect or trap the street guy's arms, it'd be too much work. I've not formally trained in JKD, but I think keeping it simple would be the best way to go.

So maybe do a low stop kick to the knee and shoot in for takedown would be more preferable for you?

This is certainly a successful formula. But do you really want to go to the ground (intentionally) in a street fight?

        You can't!
        No-one can.

What you can do, is take control of the situation.
        Dictate pace and space.

Any blow, be it a kick or punch, unless it finishes a confrontation, only serves to prolong it.
You can clinch and/or takedown somewhat nullifying the striking game, but this may not always be a good idea.

You look to unload a 'finishing' strike or move as soon as possible.
You will get hit and it's better to learn that in training rather than elsewhere.

Where did I say anything about going to the ground? The only person that's going to the ground is the guy you're throwing. Just because you shot in a single or double, doesn't mean you have to mount him. Slam him on his head and be on your way.

The way testbuggie described the opponent's attacking style, a leg shot seems to be a very good choice. He's focused on hitting you with his punches, so shooting in on the bad guy's legs seems ideal to me.

Okay, I see what your saying. I like a good double leg or an osoto gari.

Charge in and clinch. Then use the knees.

If you're outweighed and charging in seems too scary; sidestep and get out of his straight frontal line attack, then use knees (groin, torso) and elbows (ribs, head).

He´s to close, nothing works? Help him to close the distance and headbutt! He´s to tall? Try a throat jab. It´s dangerous but it works. But remember you´d do all of these only if you can´t run away, or your footwork is bad.

What about a preemptive attack? Someone else said it, action is faster than reaction. You're in a confrontation, you feel like the guy is about to come at you, you go at him first. Personally I'd go for a round kick to his knee before he throws his first punch.

You´re right, if you have no chioce a preemptive attack is first of all to do. My suggestions are the last line of defence.

                      how to intersept/block this

Instead of backpedalling, blast forward, cover and go to clinch. Then headbutts, knees and elbows. If you're reluctant to blast forward, zone to left or right and try to get to his dead side.
If you are reluctant to kick to the groin then, pinching, biting, eye gouging, and ear ripping are out too, I suspect. Then ask him to stop and fight fair. That'll work because your opponent will ALWAYS fight fair!

Fighting is kinda like the stock market. You will take hits and give hits, take wins and take losses. Like the markets- if you're afraid to get hit, don't play.

I agree with the guys here- focus on the legs, or a shoot. (If you take a hit in the process, oh well.) One technique is to spear him, like in football, and grab the tops of his pant legs and lift him up by them while simultaneously lifting him off the ground with your shoulder. You may then have to elbow him down & off you after that if he grabs on, but hey- free hit for you.

The scenario you're describing sounds a lot like the typical 8 year old's karate class. That hay-yah shite never gets very far imo. If nothing else- it's tell tale that the guy doesn't have any other plan than "one-two, one-two".

I agree with alot of what the other members have said...also wat to point out like most of the other members did...FOOTWORK! Your footwork wins fights. You need to train it...daily. Train this scenario if you are that worried about it. Get in class both of you put on some headgear and train it. You will find that if you use good footwork like the female trianlge or the quarter turn foot work or the side step that you will be able to move away from or zone off from his attack..when you do this take him down with a double leg or a single leg or land a really good thai kick to his thigh or knee or side step and throw a nice hook to his head or ribs or kidneys. You will find that it is not that difficult to defeat the guy moving in a linear direction if he is attacking like this. Also if you to a double or single leg takedown this does not mean you go to the ground. You take him down capture his leg and remain on your feet to lock him out with a standing achilles lock or a knee bar or a heel hook. and be sure to keep your inside leg on his free leg or groin to keep him from kicking you and from raising up.

This raises a very good question- kind of a poll, if you will...

**Assuming it was a 1 on 1 fight**

If you could take someone to the ground without going down yourself, would you? Or would you rather take the fight to the ground?
