I would have to say that if given the chance to take some one down with out going down...I would do that. If I have the chance to do a takedown and remain on my feet then that is the route I am going to take. After all there are just as many submissions I can do from my feet as I can while on the ground. If I am on my feet then I feel I will be better prepared to deal with an "outside" attack from a "friend" if that scenario should arise. Whatever happens though, in a real fight I will do whatever it takes to win and live another day...and yes that even includes walking away...if they have a gun then that means running away and setting a new land record while doing it...

SAtraight kick to the solar plexus. Works every time. If theres someone who comes in like that (and they WILL come in like that 99% of the time on the street/at school whatever) they never ever think to kick, and even in professional MMA matches people rarely see that kick. Straight kick, push hard, pushes them back anywhere from 5 feet to knocking them right off their feet. of course the punches are never straight, go straight jab-cross-jab-cross-jab-cross to their face, or lower yourself and knock all the wind out of them, then they'll probably drop their inexperienced little hands to protect their stomach or just curl up. At any rate, go wherever they're not, and you got it...mostly.

            double-leg, high-crotch to a double, ect.

I don't know about anyone else, but doesn't this seem exactly like what you don't want to do? Against a guy flailing their bodyweight around excessively, losing control of your center of balance seems like a terrible idea to me. The timing of a well placed mid-high kick, and the force required could just as easily send you backwards as send him backwards, not to mention him grabbing your foot and, well, confusion on both sides ensues then.

I'd also disagree with the 99% statistic. This seems to be a very limited scenario proported by only the most uneducated of 'fighters'.

If we are talking sparring, or sports fighting, then theres some good stuff here. Real fighting? Then some serious silliness.

Takedown? Who can honestly say they take someone down with a guarantee that thet won't go down themselves?

Footwork? Who says you will have the space to circle and skip about? The only guaranteed space is the rapidly closing gap between you and him.

The attack described is like the Straight Blast (or whatever you want to call it). If correctly applied then you may well be in trouble, i.e. waiting until you are hurt before coming in. Thankfully many people will just come wailing in at random.

Just cover (especially your jaw/neck, expect to take at least some hits, and then smother. Cover and smother (I should trademark that). There are a variety of hand positions to do this, each with plusses and minusses.

Luckily these blasts are rarely powerful blows (excepting that fantastic Victor Belfort blast some years ago, but that is a rare rare rarity!). Any blows you take won't be that bad.

You need your weight shifting forwards, get inside his guard, and then maul away at his face whilst manipulating his head all over the place. You're doing the last thing he expects AND he suddenly doesn't enjoy himself quite so much.

The straight blast can be a great tool. Know when to apply it and, just as importantly, when not to. Like any tool really.

That doesn't disqualify it as a viable option.

                    What to do..?

There are alot of things you can do in this situation...but most of it will depend on the guy who is getting attacked...his speed, weight and knowledge. I say to him...get in class and pick the biggest guy you have in class and have him put on some gloves, mouth piece and headgear and have him come at you swinging. We use to have to do this with one of my instructors...we called it blood alley(or man in the middle). The instructor would have you stand in the middle of a circle and one guy would come at you like a wild man. He would be swinging and charging in fast...you would do whatever you could then after about 30 seconds without you knowing he would send another guy in and the first guy would sit down. We would do this until we were exhausted. His point was to show us that no matter what you say you are going to do you never know until someone is charging you wanting to take off your head. Those were good times.

A couple of things come to mind. First would be a stop kick to the knee, groin, leg etc., to keep him at range. Make him think twice about coming at you. The other thing would be to bob and weave/cover, do what you can to get inside his punches and then start launching close range tools like elbows and knees. Where you don't want to be is right in his windmill punching range. At least I wouldn't.

There should be more threads like this on this forum!

It's nice to know what other people would do in this situation.

"Takedown" seems like such a vague term. Generic word for any technique that results in a loss of footing?

u have to do wat bruce lee did... stay back... keep your distance... and most importantly, develope a good, fas, powerful sidekick. if u back away, he will run at u with a flury of punches which there is no way of blocking. wat u have to do is not let him get close enough to punch u. wait until he moves. everytime he tries to move closer to u, give him a nice sidekick in the stomach. he will never be able to use that flurry of unblockable punches if he cant get close enough
