  • Training & Getting Certified With Jerry Poteet

Am considering training & getting certified in the future with Jerry Poteet. Can anyone who has already done so, tell me their experiences? Also anyone not certified who has trained with him, would be cool to hear from.

I've never met him before, but he is a direct Bruce Lee student & obviously very knowledgable.

What is his teaching method like, is he a really good teacher that really develops an individual?

How does the certification process work - you are formally tested (like a grading) , or based more on hours trained?

Does Jerry Poteet JKD Association have different levels of Instructor? Or once certified you just keep progressing?

Future costs - after initial fee to train with Jerry , do you need to pay the same or similar for future training to progress?

To get Jerry to do seminar , is it expensive i.e, to bring him to where you are to do seminar?

Is the JPJKD Association involved with Bruce Lee Foundation - the Lee Estate?

Is it worth the money to get certified by Jerry Poteet or not? Is it you pay , you get certified or you have to work hard for it?

How 'exclusive' is the JPJKD Association are you not allowed to train with other Bruce Lee students - Jesse Glover, Ted Wong, Dan Inosanto, etc & must only train with Jerry or people in the group?

To do personal training with Jerry Poteet is expensive , so would like to hear of other peoples experiences before doing so; I read for instance on here of people's bad experiences with Paul Vunak.

Have seen all Jerry's DVD's and they are really good.

    THANK YOU!

Also if anyone knows how long did Jerry Poteet actually train with Bruce Lee , as I heard from as little as 6 months & very infrequently at classes, to a few years and trained with him often?

Most of your questions should be answered by Mr. Poteet himself. He is the only one who will be able to give you the cost involved with training with him and the cost involved in maintaining your certification through him. You can always train with different people....I would suggest that if you ask him about training with other original students of Bruce Lee and he gives you a less than positive answer...or if he tells you not to train with this guy or that guy for whatever reasons then I would make it a point not to train with him in the future. He is certified by Dan Inosanto. He and Ted Lucaylucay were the first two people to be certified by Dan from his backyard group.
Good luck with your training and I hope it goes well for you.

      Tim,

Already know initial costs for 20 hours 1 on 1 with Jerry , it is $2000 U.S.

As for asking him , already have contacted them to get basic info.

But as I said in my original post , would really like to hear from others who have trained with him, or got certified by him. People on this forum noted bad experiences training with Paul Vunak, and he charges a lot; so it is well worth asking people rather than contacting people like Vunak, Poteet, etc direct & expect to get all the info. you need or hear any pros & cons.

You mentioned if Jerry recommends not to train with someone, then don't train with Jerry in the future I assume you meant? And not don't train with the person he tells you not to train with. Not sure how 'Exclusive' Jerry's group is that was one of the things I'd like to know.

But Jerry being Exclusive in JKD is not too much different than others. Dan Inosanto would hardly recommend Lamar Davis, Jerry Beasley, Gary Dill, Patrick Strong, etc - in fact he would probably advise a student if they asked not to train with people such as those.

        Train with Jerry

        Hey,

I saw your post and I wanted to make coment on the differences. Jerry's interpretation has been viewed by lee's family as more accurate. While from my understanding Inasantos view has been taken to court.

I have attended classes offered in these by different pupils one from Jerry and from Inasanto. I must admit there appears to be a difference. Anyway Jerry somehow is able to teach his students how to tap into energy? When my instructor a former pupil of Jerry told me of this I thought he was high and I laughed in his face.

Anyway Insanto's version was not liked by Bruce because there was to much of the Phlipino art in it. Which is noticeable from this instructor. I ended up going with the Insanto Pupil because I felt more comfortable with this fella. The other guy kinda spooked me.

Anyway after some investigation JKD does use some principles of TAI-CHI Chuan that helps their students tap into their opponents energy. Which I have not seen expressed in the teachings by the Inasanto pupils.

You have to experience it to believe it. I would like to learn how to do this seperately in some other class but don't know where in Chicago.

        Good luck,
        kolekinc

I don't know Guro Dan personally, but I honestly don't think he would do that. In fact, I think he would do the opposite and encourage you to train with different people and explore what they have to offer.

im am certified by sifu jerry.
tho i train mainly in the inosanto line. i found sifu to be very, very good, he is also very open person. who answers all questions.
i found him to be a good teacher different ways of geting the idea's across.
the instructorship is based on hours trained. to get to the next level i believe you need to pay the same. but your have to check that one.
tho sifu talks to linda still, the jpjkd asso has nothing to do with the foundation.
its well worth the money. i train with dan inosanto's group. i was not told that i was not allowed to.
i glad i did. was alot of money, but great experience

              Sifu Poteet

From what I can see Jerry's jkd has more modified wing chun than Ted's, but less than Pat Strong's or Jesse Glover's. I think the jkd "matrix" is suited to individual tendencies. What do you like best: weapons, bjj, mma, muay thai, silat,
boxing, savate, street defense, or wing chun? You can find a Lee-arts teacher who teaches what you like best.

From time to time I browse the forums to see if there are any changes in the way people discuss JKD. As a martial artist I teach classes in karate/taekwondo/jujitsu and kickboxing. Why? Because I enjoy those arts. I have never owned a jeet kune do school or taught an art/style and called it jeet kune do. I have however published a number of books/article on JKD. Perhaps some of you have read my articles. Keep in mind that Bruce developed an art he called jeet kune do and he taught this art ( replete with JKD kicks and JKD punches and JKD this and that) roughly between 1967 and 1969.
In Jan. 1970 Bruce disbanned the teaching of JKD as an art. From 1970 until his death in 1973 available literature indicates that Bruce considered JKD to be his personal philosophy of martial arts. I write about my interpretation of Bruce's personal philosophy of martial arts.
As a writer I am free to say what I want. As a consumer you are free to accept it or reject it, save it ot toss it away. I appreciate the fact that because readers buy my books and request my articles editors often contact me to write more about JKD.
I am writing to ask you to please not confuse me as a teacher of jeet kune do. I am not a JKD instructor. I just don't have any interest in teaching the art of JKD. I know for a fact that Dan (Inosanto) reads my articles/books. I know for a fact that Dan has recommended the reading of my published work.
As for Jerry Poteet, he is indeed an instructor of jeet kune do. Any entreprenuer will tell you that you base your fees on what the market will permit. Mr. Poteet is very expensive. He is still a highly qualified and experienced instructor of jeet kune do.
