  • Finger Jabs/Bil Jee strikes

In one of our other forums there is heated debate about the effectiveness of Wing Chun Kung Fu. One of the techniques that made WC legendary was the finger jab.

But do they really work? Legend has it that finger jabs have been used in actual combat with lethal and deadly force. Can anyone attest to the combat effectiveness of finger jabs? Definetly not a ring technique. JKD has the finger jab also since it's founder started in Wing Chun. Is there mystery surrounding the finger jab? Does it really have to be used at certain angles? Do your nails really need to be sharpened?

There is a potential danger to harm your fingers when meeting a tough surface. In Biu Jee you are using the edge of the palm and other natural weapons

Check out the last UFC to be reminded of the potential of finger jabs to the eye(s).

          Yes sorry,

One of the earlier fights(i cant remember the name of the fighters) anyway one of the fighters got a straight thrust in the eye,the finger went real deep in to the eyesocket, the fighter screamed(dont blame him) fell to the floor in obvious pain,he couldnt continue, and his eye swelled badly immediatlly, although it was a accident(according to the other fighter) it was a very effective shot, and caused a quick fininsh to the fight and this against a trained proffesional opponent used to pain, but getting stabbed in the eye is a different pain to what MMA athletes, boxers,Muay Thai fighters ,wrestlers etc are used to hence the fighters reaction.

If anything the finger jab can allow you the few seconds you need to take care of business.

They don't NEED to be "lethal or deadly" to be effective.
And you don't have to be a martial arts master to hurt someone by sticking your fingers in soemone's eyes.

Do this: Extend your lead punch as far as it can go.
              Now extend your Fingers...MORE REACH

Now...if you practice sticking your fingers into someone's eyes quickly and form longer ranges OUCH.
The way I was trained was to keep the fingers slightly bent.
And the hand angled up slightly so that the face guides the fingers in like a ramp.
It would also become a palm smash to the nose if you miss the eyes (or even get BOTH).

Southern Mantis (which I am learning) uses Eye Flicks VERY effectively.
We practice them on Punching bags and against a training partner's Chest.

What you say is very interesting and very true. I just wanted to clarify that there is a great speculation that Biu Jee is a concept to use extensively finger jabs, which is not true.
Also in a real fight where things happen too quickly you can not rely exclusively on this strategy.
                Greetings
