By his own account I don't think we can call the eye jab accidental.

I wasn't even worried about the positioning of my hands, as far as protecting myself from being hit, because I wasn't worried about getting hit, due to the fact that both of his hands were over his eye, as if my eye jab had popped his eye out of it's socket, and he was trying to put it back in.
Could Aaron defend his actions in a court of law, either criminal or civil? If we was no longer worried about being hit he also loses the argument that it was self defense.

Thanks for the post Mike. When you described him going straight into the head butt, please allow me to ask this-did he always grab the back of the neck before doing it, or did he ever just throw the top of his head into the guy's face without grabbing the neck first? I'm assuming he grabbed the guy first. I would also imagine the same would go with a knee as well, that he would grab first.

I'm pretty much aware of the techniques he has used in streetfights, and that he would not always lead off with a thigh kick, eye jab, head butt etc. I know he chooses the proper technique for the given situation. I was mostly asking because I was interested in hearing the details of it.

As they apply to the various techniques he has used in actual fights, would you be willing to share some more details? I totally understand if you don't want to, look at what happened when I shared, lol

Thanks for the quick reply. I hear you when you talk about legal implications. I thought about that when I typed that post, I don't know why I didn't mention it. I think I wasn't thinking again, like in the post where I described my experience in a streetfight. I would definitely not want to put anyone in legal limbo, especially Vu.

I really like that idea you mentioned, pretending to drop something then hitting with a head butt. In lieu of actual details, would you elaborate more on some of the tricks Vu taught you?

Thanks as always

Just before the topic goes off Headbutts,I would like to show a clip from a guy in the U.K..I know this is primarily a thread on Vunaks approach to martial arts, but thought you may enjoy what this guy has to show. His name is Richard Grannon.
Oh by the way, this is probably the most informative and one of the most entertaining threads at the moment. Thanks fellas.

Hi Mike. My training has been going well lately, but I'm still not totally satisfied. I have been trying to use the Phase one aspect of RAT, staying out in long range and intercepting and destroying incoming blows. Because of the sport aspect of training, my opponents don't actually get intercepted and destroyed (they don't feel pain), which makes phase one last much longer than it would in an actual fight. Because of that, I sometimes get overwhelmed, despite my evasive footwork. Actually, I usually only get overwhelmed when I run out of room to maneuver. When I feel this beginning to happen, I have been adding the jeet tek, which has helped prevent that to a certain extent. When a situation like that occurs, when I start getting overwhelmed (due to the closing of distance), should I just revert back to basic boxing? I was looking through some of my training notes that I took the last time I trained with Vu, and I noticed that he emphasized the boxing basics. I pretty much forgot about that, lol. Pretty much all of my sparring is with BJJ guys, so when we get close, we usually go to the ground, and we aren't wearing any gear, so I can't "open up" with punches, so I/he usually clinch and go for a takedown. I have often felt that I could do reasonably well with a 1-2 combo before the clinch happens, but when we are simulating hits, the clincher always wins.

I have been thinking about making some basic boxing my "go to" techniques when a situation like that arises. What are your thoughts?

Thanks as always

That's a darn good video on head butting, thanks for sharing!

Aaron I know your question is for Mike, and I know he can answer much better than me!, but I thought I'd chime in anyway.

From what you're saying it appears that you can't keep people at range due to limited space or other reasons, and that's going to happen. When it does, you just need to adjust what your doing to the range your in. I'd definately revert to either Boxing, Thai & Wrestling Clinch techinques, and some Trapping techinques at that range. (probably in that order too) Whether you stay there or not really depends on what you're comfortable with. If your more comfortable further out, then use the closer range techinques to create space and get back out.

Thanks Mike and Jeff. I do have a good 1-2 combo, but I am reluctant to box because of the fact that I don't like to trade blows with people. That's why I like to inflict pain on my opponent from long range, then close the distance afterwards. I have had very good luck with this strategy (the RAT strategy), but sometimes when training it without the pain factor, the distance gets closed and I sometimes wind up trading blows.

As Vunak has said, you can't afford to trade blows with someone, especially if they are larger, and being about his size, I know how that goes. Even though I have some decent fists, I think it's bad news to trade punches with a 230 lb guy. That's why I put so much emphasis on entering on my opponent when he is in pain as a result of an interception or destruction from long range, and of course when there's no room, I put a lot of emphasis on hitting first.

When I spar, I almost never fail to land at least one good solid interception or destruction before the distance gets closed. In a real fight, this would hopefully be enough to change the fight from sparring to entering. I've had pretty good results with using this strategy during sparring, despite the lack of pain. I think that if I can get this pretty much down during sparring, then it couldn't hardly fail in a streetfight, where the pain factor would be involved.

So aside from the fake interceptions and destructions, the jeet tek, and some basic boxing, do you have any other suggestions for phase one (long range) sparring?

Thanks as always

hey i have a question about paul vunak. is it true that when he would go to teach martial arts to military personnel that he would fight a few of them right off the bat to let them know he was legit? i think heard something like that on this forum once, but i dont remember.

Alpha males generally need to "feel to believe".

He discribes instances in his videos about how there is always one person in the group who questions the methods shown.Usually this person was the one the methods were shown on.He describs one instance when training SEAL's were this scenario appeared to have occured.
