  • hello, im pretty new.

well as the title says, im pretty new to martial arts (well completely new, i wont lie) and i was looking to get into it, wasnt quite sure which to go into for practical self defence, im also looking for fitness as well. i had a friend offer to teach me muay thai but i was wondering if anyone could give me some info on this forum before i sign up for any classes, i was mostly looking at jkd as it seems pretty practical for self defence please give me some feedback.

ps. sorry for the wall of text.

There are massive differences between fighting sports, martial arts and self defence.

If you genuinely want self defence then get your google out and research names like Geoff Thompson and Richard Dimitri to start with.

A bar fight is not self defense, and you know that. Any MA will help you get into some shape as you participate in there sparring, drills, and so forth. To better your own physical fitness you're going to have to take ownership of getting into shape and not rely on a MA to do it for you. And about wanting a place with discipline...Go to church (I don't care which one) paricipate in there activities in the church and out of the church.(Like feeding the homeless)

If you like, here is a link of a place that can help teach you how to build up your athletic strength www.rosstraining.com I find his articles to be pretty informative.

If you want good self defense and also a good physical workout just make sure the class isn't full of kids. You want it full of guys 17+ who will push you and get a good sweat up.

You can tell alot about a school just on fast first impressions by looking at the students and what type of people they are.
