  • Reality of knife fighting

I found this today. Its a pretty good clip as to why getting into an encounter with an edged weapon is so bad. I'm putting in here because there is a clip from Vunak's knife tape.

WARNING: There are some graphic images in the clip.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...20028377167942 <--The intro really drives home the point I'm trying to make.

Some [GRAPHIC] images as well: http://dlsports.com/knife_dangers.html

Same clip from Vunak's video, but better quality: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...2C+knife&hl=en

    **Edit**
I found a lethality chart from Get Tough that corresponds to knife strikes.

    **Edit 2**
    Added link to some pics.

    Wooow...

I always thought knife defense was extremely unrealistic... but wow - really makes the message shine.

    Cheers for that Nutz

No problem. I'm just tired of people actually training like they'll never get cut or shot. The real way to train to defend yourself against a knife or gun assault is to not be in one. Awareness training, common sense, and a strong presentation of confidence can keep you out of trouble. Don't get me wrong, shit happens, so yes you should train knife/gun defense. However, you need to do so with the expectation of the worst happening.

As the saying goes, "Run, fly, or find an equalizer".

That was a good video to watch and article to read. Thank you for posting it. I agree fully with your knife defense concepts. Also if I might add, a good knife defense system could be Parkour. Or what I like to call, "The Art of Running Away."

I should have mentioned this before: The "equalizer" my instructor used to refer to was akin to Bruce's thinking that if they beat you with a fist, grab a pipe or baseball bat. If they have the bat or knife, grab a gun. That's the sort of philosophy we're talking about, not fighting a knife-wielding attacker with your own knife.

              however it can be said

that training in knife techniques and disarment is better than not having any training or experience at all,

              but yeah,

don't ever take on a guy with a knife!

Thanks for the post Nutz...I have seen those pics before and that video does a good job of driving home the point thanks for the post.

Also, you might want to try and get a copy of "Survivng Edged Weapons" if you can find it anywhere. I have an old copy but the quality is not to good all the time but it has Dan Inosanto, Edgar Sulite and other Kali men in it. It has alot of scenario training that Dan and them used for training the different police departments. Good stuff if you can get it.

                Thanks again

The first thing we need to understand is that a knife is an ambush weapon. This means that in MOST cases the victim cannot "choose" to take on a person with a knife. Most stabbings happen without the person ever knowing that there was a knife involved. Awareness is key and being "weapon-centric" is imperative. If we neglect to observe the chance of a knife (mind you this chance is 100% of the time) and we actually do decide to enter into physical confrontations we need to use techniques that revolve around being weapon-centric. Too many people now-a-days look at MMA as a true defense against a knife; "I'll just take them down." This is foolish in itself to the point that it makes me nauseous. Check out a few clips from DBMA:

Wow, thank you. This really opens up my eyes and many other's eyes. I think learning the realistics of fights is exactly what we should do. Most martial arts instructors dont train for a realistic street fight or knife fight, they just train for certain scenarios.

Why oh why do people still think its a good thing to blur out stuff in their videos? Do they think that because they're hiding the technique that people will want to know what they're doing even more? Puhleez, get a grip already...

Other than the crap I mention above, the vids are alright. They seems to have a firm grasp of the realities of combat with edged weapons.

it's blurred to not show the technique. the dog catcher is an innovation by guro marc, and guro marc is in the BUSINESS of martial arts. by showing this technique in the preview it would not only give away the meat of the DVD it would've opened the flood gates for others to say '' we have that too'' or something along those lines.
