  • text book training

I just wanted to ask u guys about text book training.

In the past i have been doing tae kwan do and wushu but i have stopped for a long time and since then i have been reading training material and pratising by myself.

Well the question is do u think its possible to learn the technquies and methods mentaly? i mean i havent tried it to see if it works but i have it all in my head.

guess i kinda answered the question myself..anyway just wanted to get your views on this matter. ^^

LEARNING this way is not a good idea. Too many opportunities to learn things incorrectly and have to undo later, or even possibly cause damage.

Mental training is good REINFORCEMENT, though. After a class, visualize the stuff - it seems to sink in faster & deeper. Then test it out in class again. Some studies have shown that the neural patterns used in that movement/technique are better established by doing this.

But the lack of ability to double check learning either in real time or with a good instructor isn't a good idea.

Books and videos are great learning tools but they MUST be reinforced by actual hands on training. Bruce always said, knowing is not enough, we must apply. I think that's a good point. So I'd recommend studying up, but do some actual training too so you can actually learn to translate the stuff in your head to your hands.

If you wanted to learn to play basketball and you read a book on how to shoot a jump-shot do you think you would be any good at it?
If you wanted to be a good hitter in baseball and read a book by Ted Williams on the proper swing, do you think you would be any good at it?
              etc., etc.

Well..the books must have some effect rite? as many grandmasters such as Bruce Lee, Jhoon Rhee and even grandmaster Yip Mans son have written books which form a guide for many martial artist.

So even though we duno how to execute the moves to its full potential at least there is a guide to helps us. Having said that, of course its always better to have a sifu to teach us fisrt hand.
