Which JKD NYC School to choose?

I live in Queens, NY. I have went to check out both Nubreed Academy in Whitestone and also Progressive Martial Arts in Flushing. Both schools are easy for me to get too and fit perfect into my weird schedule. I am just not sure which one too choose or which is the better school of the two.

I have done the intro class at both schools and i liked them both. Could anyone offer any opinions on either of these two schools I would greatly appreciate it.

those 2 academys you posted are too far from where i live and I would never make classes with my schedule. I checke dinto almost every place i could make work and the only two are : Progressive Martial Arts and Nubreed Academy. Please if anyone has trained at one or both and can offer any insight into which is the better of the two to study at it would really help me out alot.

I haven't trained at either school, but they both look really good. If you are interested in cross-training BJJ along with JKD, you might consider going with Progressive Martial Arts simply because their head BJJ instructor is a black belt. Nubreed may have fine BJJ instructors too, but their rank wasn't indicated on the website and all other things being equal I would go with the most experienced instructor.

I would recommend my school (www.andersonsmartialarts.com), but it's in Lower Manhattan and it sounds like that would be too far away from you.

I would check that place out but lower manhatten just too far for me and i'd never make a class.

The more i check into it Progressive seems like a better choice. The only downside is their pricing i'd say. It's 229 a month for a gold membership that allows you to take unlimited amount of classes. As a beginner though it's 169 a month (1 year contract) and you can only take 3 JKD classes a week. You get free uniform, and all testing is free, and it $99 for focus mitts, gloves, kali sticks and a gym bag.

At nubreed, they charge 169 a month (6 month contract) and you can take unlimited JKD classes. After 6 months your entitiled to take all the classes and it's 199 a month for unlimited classes. Though here they charge $95 for a registration fee then $65 for a uniform and then what ever equipment u need, plus they charge $35 for testing.

Price wise i think progressive sounds like the better choice since they don;t charge for a uniform or testing or a registration fee. It's a tough decision though.

Wow, such a wierd difference in pricing between the States and here, and even between club fees and gear cost. The $99 for gloves, mitts, sticks and a bag seems cheap (if gloves and mitts are leather). What kind of uniform? A gi? I guess if they teach BJJ a gi is expected, but always find it weird to train in a gi for JKD :-)

The going rate for a monthly fee differes greatly between where you and I live. I can't imagine paying over $100 a month for limited classes. My own club fees are only $60 a month for 3 two hour classes per week, $20 more gives you access to a Savate class on the weekend - and we don't charge for (no stress) testing.

This is not a slight on the cost of training where you are, just a reflection of the market.

Ya pricing is def on the upper end compared to other places but heck it's NYC. Everything is more expensive here! There rent per month is probably astronomical and they can get away with the pricing so they charge it.

The $99 for the gloves and focus mitts isn't bad they both made by combat.

The uniform at both schools isn't a gi. It's like a T-shirt with the school name and either Rash gaurd shorts or Sweat pants. If you take the Muay Thai Classes you *have* to have Muay Thai shorts (more money).

One other differece i seen between the two schools. Is at Nubreed they start out there classes more traditional, where you line up have to say a creedo then do the traditional salutation and then turn to a shrine of bruce lee agian do the salutation and then meditate. Now this is not a bad thing at all though if paying this kinda money a month for 1 hour classes i'm not sure if i really want to meditate for 15 min of the class. It's becoming a difficult decison for me as i really don't want to waste my money for non essential training.

I would avoid the school with the Bruce Lee shrine and meditation session - little out there for me.

There is a aesthetic pleasure when you train on the floor and you will learn the curriculum in detail. There are also Muay Thai and Kali classes. I highly recommend Progressive Martial Arts for anyone.
