Hello I am new, I know Mike Brewer and we trained under Paul back in the day. I wanted to chime in on a issue.
Bruce Lee could have, better yet would have beat a lot of his opponents although there are a lot of good fighter out there..everybody is missing that besides the speed, the power, the way of fighting what made Bruce eclectic from all othere's an to this day would have still dominated, would be his TIMING, SPATIAL RELATION, INTERCEPTION,ECONOMY OF MOTION, AND TRAPPING THAT HE COULD FUNCTIONALIZE. Things like these were made aware to us thru him. he had it down packed! And no man is superman but this man if you pay close attention to his body and mind compared to a lot of todays fighters you will see why he was who he was. The who would win against is pure B.S. The man in the 60' 70's was so far ahead of his time people now only think they are the ones who invented what Bruce already had discovered.

I think nobody could beat Bruce Lee.
He was undefeated during his life.
and now no-one can beat him yet.

Besides he's probably the most important figure for every martial art knowledge that we as non-chinese and non-japanese people have.

Ever heard the saying "If you think you can or you think you can not, you're probably right!"

Your attitude is one of many reasons art tends to stagnate...

Not meaning to sound like a suck up wimp, but Lee DID have experience with boxing WITH boxing rules. He won a few tournaments in Hong Kong. Furthermore he trained in wrestling and ground fighting.

he also lost against a grappler.

And boxing tournaments....in Hong Kong....if you know Hong Kong.... just lol.

This is a tired arguement and the reason i dislike the general banter in JKD.

Some of the training methods that BL was doing in the 1960s and early 70s are only just being picked up on by others now,and some of his methods i have never heard of any one else doing yet, personally i think he was waaay ahead of his time and even today if a young man would be a match for anybody, his suddeness, his explosive take offs, his power and speed were i belive a cut above,as Jesse Glover(i think) said Bruce was like several olympic athletes all rolled into one,who is like that nowadays? who has the strength of a olympic weightifter, the flexilbility of a olympic boxer, can hit a fast as a lightweight boxing champ but hit as hard as a heavyweight boxing champ, these are the attributes Bruce Lee is reputed to have(as told by people such as J Glover,J Demile,D, Inosanto etc),personally i think he had it,he had the x factor!

Good point about the Hong Kong thing. However you've gotta remember the dude had STREET experience.

BTW I said he TRAINED in wrestling. Didn't say he could beat ANYBODY.I replied to the dude who said "Huo Yuan Jia" is comparable. Dont say I dont know shit about kung fu either. Lets just say I regularly train with a guy who does Northern Shaolin. Lee was GOOD! People can and MUST surpass him, probably already have. But not that dude.

As a add on to my last post,Bruce was also ahead of his time by thinking of MMA look at the beggining of Enter The Dragon, small open fingered gloves, mma shorts, striking and grappling mixed(and biting)etc.

And the great Sugar Ray Lenoard said he moddeled his slipping of Bruce Lee,and we all know what type of evasions he had!.

But mma had been around for years previously to this.
                              Look at pankration.

There were other forms as well, even in the UK we had MMA fights held regularly where competitors trained in boxing and wrestling. Soldiers in ww2 used to compete in this as well, especially from america.

What Bruce did was to organise it, put the philosophy across in an appealing and relatively logical manner. His philosophy is nothing particularly new. Look at Sun Tzu and you will find most of what Bruce says and add that with bits more modern philosophy.
The guy repackaged what was already there and in that he did it well. The medium of film helped this enourmously and he had the character to push it all.

I really dont support the idea that he was anything special beyond that. Hes very famous not very special. Had he been special, and i have said this before, he would have used the camera which he loved so well to actual beat real fighters. Which he didnt really do. What happened was lots of people saw the money he was making and jumped on the bandwagon.
Cynical? maybe. But realistic i think.
No one in any sport has been unique. its never happened. Everyone argues if tyson could have beaten ali and so on.
Whats clear is Bruce never put his money where his mouth was. Hes fought no one on film when he had all the film crews he needed.
I dont buy it. He did a lot of good for martial arts by really clarifying MMA style training and finding your own way. And for that i think he has done a fantastic job.
All in my opinion of course.

as per the lifting weights and so on, many mma guys manage the same, he was ahead of his time though. Speed wise we dont know unless we see him fight. Its easy to be fast in the air but much harder to be fast in the ring and so on.

WAIT! I've heard that before.Look buddy, you want proof? the guy never FOUGHT a guy on film, but he broke Chuck Noriss's hand on a TV set... plus that guy ADMITTED he was scared of Lee.

BTW do you know WHY he came to america? The dude was member of a street gang where he got into SO much trouble he had to be shipped off to avoid prison.

PUNCH THE AIR!? I'd like to see YOU punch the AIR that fast. I cant belive I'm saying this but a lot of the stuff in his movies would have been IMPOSSIBLE to pull off without that SPEED! Movies are faked true, but his were less faked than others, That shit he did to Ohara with the side kick was REAL! That was fast played at normal speed.

Also he DID compete in Karate tournaments when he first came to America, where he ripped through...Dan Inosanto.

Nobody but an obsessed idiot would have been able to come up with an insanity like JKD. Someone who must be a true fighter.

And have'nt you heard about that incident on set where he had to beat up a guy to shut him up? Its on wikipedia.

The Spartans were never caught on film. How do you know they were such good fighters?
