  • The Straight Lead

Now I went through learning two different sides to this.
The first is the high straight lead.
The second is the straight lead to the body.
Now I have been hearing of this in/out sorrta deal.
I know the straight lead will change upon getting in a fight and you may use it in a variety of ways.
But can someone explain this in/out straight lead.

elliptical punch is sometime called short arc

The elliptical punch is a punch that is vertical in its structure.....Think of it like this....Your punch starts off in a straight line going say to their front of their face.....The impact should blow through with power, at which point there is snap return effect at its end point....

In other terms get in a right lead or "On Guard Position".....Now just for the purpose of learning it, extend your arm out all the way so that it won't go out any further.....Now bring you arm/hand back half that distance......That’s your starting point of any JKD punch, its already half the distance to the closest target.......Just so you understand it, go very slow and extend it out without locking the elbow out...Think of the left shoulder moving to the rear, while at the same time the front shoulder moving forward to the target.....Once you blow through the target, its comes off the centerline toward the left (but not to far off the centerline).....As the return is in process it makes its way back to the original starting position......

Another way, start from the same position mention above....Now extend it out again starting to bring your hand slowly back to the center of your chest.....Once your hand get to the half way point on its return the elbow will start lifting out toward the right.....At that point start to drop elbow down and your hand/arm should be in its original starting position.....

Sometimes things get lost in translation, words don't express moment, and thus Bruce Lee saying "FEEL IT" ....I hope this has helped some of the new guys...I thought I would share some of my observations on this punch which seems to give newer students a hard time.....How's that for sharing knowledge []

    Peace Out! []

IMO you should stick generally with the boxing step jab for power.
      Other techniques as above
are for when you are really advanced.

No this is how power can be generated...My students can hit like a sledgehammer.
