Thanks for the correction, I really shouldn't be guessing like that. LOL

Seems like everyone is in Cali!

If this keeps up I'm going to have to pack a bag and start heading on a long journey...

If you don't mind me asking (an its ok if you do) what state do you live in. I don't know how good they are but some sites do list JKD/Jun Fan instructors. Google JKD or Jun fan instructors. Depending on your definition of 1st generation you choices are very limited. If your definition of 1st generation includes Jerry Poteet (I'm not saying he is this is his training so he gets to decide) I think he has some video's or a webcast or something to train with. Going by another post you have I'm not sure your interested in this anymore. You could also start a small group and attend An Inosanto seminar and train what you learn their.

I live in Vancouver BC Canada, which seems like the place I shouldn't be if everyone is in Cali.....

I have seen many websites that apparently teach JKD but I did want to get a hold of the first generations although rare and a few, to get the art as it is true, I would love to be certified to teach JKD But the most important part to me is that I get the chance to train with those who really did train and know Bruce personally so that i can evolve in my own art.

I'm always interested in martial arts and that includes JKD...
Dan Inosanto only has classes out in Cali as well am i Correct?

Ok I'm not criticizing you in any way. No matter how you classify what is and isn't a first generation instructor. Trying to train under one directly is very hard. Even if you deal in the facts you can have disagreement. I would classify anyone who trained at one of Bruce's schools (some may specify trained directly under Bruce) and either became an instructor under Bruce or Dan or Taky (since J. Lee didn't certify anyone) a first generation Instructor. To me this would include Larry Hartsel, Tim Tackett, Ted Wong and many more I'm not going to list here. People who like Paul V, Rick F. and many many others I would consider 2nd generation students.

Here is a list of what may be available in your area.

World Wide Jeet Kune Do/JKD Instructors Listing- ojkd, jkdc, pfs, fjkd, reality based self defense systems

I can't vouch for any of them. If their is one in your area check it out. Also look for seminar's in your area. Dan gets around quite a bit. So he may be in your area. Of the older crowd I would recommend Dan & Tim. With Dan you may not get JKD/Jun Fan. Dan teaches what the seminar host requests. It could be Jun Fan, Kali, Silat and so on.

Tim Tackett if you can find him (or one of his students) would be your best bet for classic Jun Fan. He also has some DVD's with some excellent info. Ted may be a good choice but I've never been to a seminar. Also at the inosanto academy Dan has a 9 DVD series for sale. One of the DVD's is dedicated to Jun Fan Gung Fu. This is what most people think is JKD.

What you could do is find a jkd school you can stand and augment it with seminar or DVD training. This way you could find a training buddy or two and work on your own thing. Also if you find a mediocre to good school. Once or twice a year you could travel to Cali and train at the source.

Now I want to be clear I am not trying to tell you what to do, train or think. But you seem hell bent on slapping your own thing together and create your own JKD. You can do this.

It's kind of like getting a load of Barley, hops, water and other stuff and creating your own beer. On your own it will probably taste like crap and may even blowup in your face or burn your house down. Or you could go to a JKD school and get a beer already to drink. Hey it might even be cold. You might not like the bitter disloyal taste of some of the older beers who may or may not be certified. You might not like the age and limited flavor. You may like a brand that has adjusted its taste over the years to keep up with time. Or the brand that hasn't changed its recipe since 1970.

Even if you want to make your own beer. You may want to train with a brewmaster and learn how brewing is done.

I hope I didn't loose you in metaphor or insult you.

                  No Offense taken...

Bleh, I wrote out a huge piece in reply, but than my power went out what luck huh?
Anyways I'm not in any mood to retype a whole big thing out again, to make it short, thanks for the information, I understand that finding these main people will be hard and even rare and could never happen but from where i stand JKD is one of the most realistic street fighting art, Don't get me wrong I am researching different arts, and I'm not going to use JKD as the only way, as that is a cage which would only stunt my growth as a fighter/martial artist.

I can vouch for Trevor Clarkson, who teaches out of Richmond. He's one of Paul Vunak's senior guys.

I've been keeping in touch with a lot of the martial arts community, and it helped a lot considering i use to work for "Bushido Martial arts supplies" I got to hear a lot of talk from a lot of different teachers.
Anyways in some of these talks, I have heard that the CFG was garbage...

Now I'm not into the whole drama thing, and I'm not going to bash anyone unless they deserve it, but if you can vouch for them I'm interested, but doesn't CFG change one hell of a fee for joining?

A lot of good guys like Tim Tackett and apparently even Guro Dan Inosanto teaches JKD Free, and accept donations for it, I actually heard CFG are expensive... =/

What ever happen to the good old days where the crazy Gungfu masters would take in students and teach them the way of the martial way just because... lol

                          Well damn MTV! lol
Actually in light of that, and because martial arts have become too much of a how much money can i make for teaching this to these people type thing, I've decided some time ago to put together a training group for those who have martial arts background or have a strong willingness to learn.

The group will basically have homework for different people to research, and come back to show what they have learnt, while others will teach what they already know and learn what others have to offer, a group where we can spar, and grow as martial artist/fighters, with like minded friends...

...I just have to get my shit together and start calling everyone so far up to set up a training day hahaha

Trevor Clarkson and his CFG group are superb. Trevor is one of Paul Vunak's oldest and best students, I highly recommend him.

High level martial arts instructors, especially those who have travelled the country, continent and the world training in JKD, spend 10, 15, 20 years and tens of thousands of dollars developing their skills. They invest more years and more money than most Doctors and Lawyers do to reach the level they do. Why shouldn't they charge good money in return for teaching these skills to people? Every other professional in any industry does, why should professional martial artist instructors have to give their hard earned skills away for peanuts?

If you feel a class is outside of your budget then that's fine, don't train there. It doesn't mean they are expensive, it just means that you don't place the same value on martial arts instruction the other students who choose to train there.

My advice would be to go down to Richmond and meet the man personally. Take a free class. Then decide for yourself whether it's worth it to join.
