  • Lazy man's martial art

I have heard it said that JKD is "the lazy man's martial art". What precisely does that mean? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

I don't know where you heard that, but that is not the case sir. At least not for me. I train everyday. On the days I'm not in class, I'm in front of the mirror, shadow boxing, and working my angles. I've been caught doing it at work a couple of times. lol. But I don't care. I'm motivated. Not lazy.

JKD is one of many martial arts where if you kiss the right ass and play the game, you can hide away and never get found out. That's not just JKD though, its a lot of martial arts. Lazy people can, and do, thrive in these arts.

The only real exceptions I see are the Combat Athletic arts. Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, Wrestling, BJJ, MMA etc. You can't hide, either you train hard and improve or you get found out.

I think there's some confusion... when someone calls JKD the lazy man's MA I don't think they mean that the people who train in it are literally lazy. What they mean is that the art is, compared to most other arts, simple and no-nonsense eg you use the least amount of effort to accomplish what you need to do, you use the simplest move available, you don't need too much strength, etc.

You've asked a question then answered it yourself. Now there's a lazy man's martial art

            Sorry, couldn't resist.

A fight is actually a pretty straight forward thing. What martial arts does is takes that simple thing, breaks it down into a thousand scenarios, breaks those scenarios down into a thousand drills, then breaks those drills down into a thousand techniques. That's why it takes the average person a few decades to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Its mostly bullshit, which is why an average guy who has experienced real violence a few times will knock most martial artists on their arse.

So, JKD. Buce Lee tried as best as he could to strip all that away, he tried to circumvent the superficial and get to the essence of the problem. I think there are very good aspects to JKD which do just that, especially if you train with someone like Paul Vunak who keeps it to the nitty gritty. Is JKD the best art at being simple? In my opinion no, it is still clouded with too many asthetics. Is it the worst? By a long margin no.

Learn the basics, practice the basics, own the basics.

As long as you do this, then anything intricate will still look like the basics.

I'll agree with that. It's about efficiancy of movement more than fancy, flowery triple spin back dive kicks and the like.

JKD is training every aspect of a what is going to happen in a real fight.
Boxing, Kicking, Trapping (even though im not shure this really helps hahah), grappling and staying out of trouble!!

Shure this is not being lazy!

It is human nature to be lazy... This is why are body builds muscles when these muscle are not efficient for the task ... This happens so the task at hand becomes "simple & easy”...

                    Something to think about...
