  • Bruce and tkd???

    Hi guys

I've heard that bruce has some sayings about most of martial arts.

for example he said: traditional karate has too many useless techniques. boxing doesn't use legs. wing chun techniques don't have enough power and ...

i want to know if he had a saying about korean martial art taekwondo?

or had he really fought a tkd guy as shown in "legend of bruce lee" tv series?

    thank you all

Bruce Lee had many documented observations on various martial arts. To the best of my knowledge, none of them included the statements above.

As EF said he trained with Joon Rhee. He also held a reasonably strong interest in Hapkido, going on to cast two prominent exponents of the art in his movies as opponents: Hwang In Shik (Way of the Dragon) and Ji Han Jae (Game of Death).

I remember Guro Inosanto saying that the kicking from Korean arts complimented the Northern Kung Fu systems Bruce Lee had been trained in, and were of particular interest because of their aesthetic value on screen.

Bruce Lee had many observations about Karate, Boxing and Wing Chun. I have never read any commentary where he said Karate had "too many useless techniques", he just understood it's limitations. Boxing does use legs, very much so, its footwork is second to none and your punching momentum stems from the legs upwards. Bruce Lee understood this well, he was a huge fan of Boxing. Finally, he spent most of his formative years in the USA showing people just how powerful the art of Wing Chun was, so I don't understand where the last claim comes from. I'm not a Bruce Lee historian, but my point is that he didn't just throw out random generalisations like the ones you have quoted. His commentaries on the arts were intelligent and articulate.

These observations and commentaries are documented in several well known and worldwide bestselling publications. Start with The Tao of Jeet Kune Do, and go from there.

Bruce Lee shared some insights and trainings with Jhoon Rhee " A taekwondo master , and father of American Taekwondo " .
Bruce also use one of the taekwondo guys in his film " Way of the Dragon " Wong In sik .

FYI. Han Jae on Game of death is Hapkido not Taekwondo

If you look at his fight in game of death, it seems to be just normal punching and kicking from a southpaw stance.

                              Way cool site!

The book was purchased for me as a gift. I recommend all John Little's work on Bruce Lee. He's an excellent writer & editor. I have two copies of many of his books...one for my collection & one I dog-ear & underline in yellow.
