  • Jeet Kune Do/Kali, Kajukenbo or BJJ for self defense on the street

    Hi Everyone,

I am new here and would like some feedback. I am 50, and would like to learn realistic street effective self defense. I am not interested in tournaments, just good self defense. After looking at my options in the area, I have settled on a Jeet Kune Do/Kali Academy which is run by a well known experienced teacher, Kajukenbo, and a local BJJ academy run by Carlson Gracie BB's.

I know they are all good systems, but want to know which is more practical for the street. Also, which will be quicker to learn. Any comments and advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx, Revfidel

My friend, you'll find a thousand threads on this or any other martial arts forum asking the question "which of these arts would be best for self defence?"

The answers are as worthless as the question.

The only way to find out, is to find out.

I'm sorry Michael, but your posts just lack any contributory value!

BJJ (IMO) is a sport, and though brutal is mainly useless for the street. Whoever said, "90% of street fights go to the ground" is self-serving. I'd like to know who went around surveying 100% of streetfights. One of BJJ's signatures moves is to get someone in their guard & while there are many sporting techniques from that position...they've never had anybody grab or punch their testicles, much less stick their thumbs in their eyes.

Kali is primarily a stick fighting art & depending on what state you're in...it maybe illegal to carry them...not to mention impractical.

JKD is the Holy Grail of streetfighting martial arts.

All of the arts you name are solid, if you have a solid instructor. That's really the question; not which art is objectively the most effective, but which of the instructors in your area know their stuff and which of their classes you enjoy the most and can stick with. If you have a good instructor you'll learn, and if you enjoy the class you'll stick with it. I agree you have to "find out to find out." Try some classes, learn about the arts, see what makes sense to you and suits you and what you can stick with.

          I disagree.

He wants to learn "realistic streetfighting."

BJJ is sport...primarily on the ground. While you're attempting to throw on a triangle choke...the guy's buddies are stomping you in the head & stabbing you in the back.

Kali, AGAIN, is primarily a stick fighting art. How "realistic" is it to go around carrying rattan sticks under your coat?

Disagree all you want, it's healthy. BJJ may have a heavy emphasis on the ground, but an individual BJJ instructor may also have a Judo and/or Muay Thai background and be able to supplement their instruction with good standup technique, while the instructor of a legitimate "street fighting" art across town might not be able to fight their way out of a paper bag. Instructor qualification matters.

              Sweetheart,

You rocked up here a couple of days ago, and started stamping your feet all over the JKD forum, telling everyone what's what about everything. You're throwing your weight around like you own the place, and you're coming across as an arrogant, rude childish little prick.

If you want to be part of a good JKD forum then I think this is the best one on the web. There are some very experienced instructors on here who offer a great contribution. If you want to be part of that then I suggest you wind your neck in and drop the fucking attitude.

All I've seen you write so far is cliche bullshit that you read in a book or saw in a DVD, we've had a hundred guys on here like you and you won't be around long. So if YOU would like to make a positive contribution then stop going around jumping on other people's posts and being a condescending prick.

And yet you're the one suffering from testosterone poisoning. You lose your temper start cursing & you routinely pontificate about things you obviosly know very little about (JKD). You're caustic & antagonistic.

And you know pathetically little about me...yet your attempts at filling in the blanks are indicative of a childish know-it-all and fall far short of the mark.

I've read many of your posts & this is your MOP with many other forumites.

Curious...what's your JKD background? I'd be "keen" to know.

I'm shocked! I mean...given your demeanor & ill temperment. You obviously weren't interested in the philosophical side of JKD now were you? How would these people feel if they knew how you were acting & some of the things you've said?

How dare you tell people their questions are stupid & the answers (which hadn't even yet been given) were equally stupid!

I too have studied with some of these people (and I don't mean distance training). One I'm very good friends with and he'd be surprised @ your name-calling and lack of self-control.

No need to worry...I won't say anything to him...I'm not that way. But I am extremely surprised.

Nice website by-the-way. But you're a very small framed person to be calling people you don't know "prick."

                      Perhaps we'll meet someday.

Given what's taken place in this thread...I really appreciate your grown-up rational response.

                            Micheal,

He (or she) is clearly just a troll, a kid who has come on here to have fun stirring up shit and trying to get a rise out of people. Just ignore them and they'll go away. Thanks for all your great contributions to the forum, don't waste your time on trolls like this.

                              For what?

After calling me a "prick" among other things...you're not about to get a christmas card now!

And "Clubber Lang" has it all wrong...I'm not a kid, and I'm not challenging you.

However, I've looked at your website, and sincerely, it's put together very well (my compliments). I'm just saying we obviously run in some of the same circles, and we should be able to disagree without losing our temper & resorting to name calling.

I'm just saying, before calling someone a "prick" you might want to double check & make sure they're not built like a gorilla! You're liable to get your teeth knocked out.

What was it you called me..."sweatheart." Seriously Michael - start drinking Createne & lfting some weights...you're as skinny as a rail!

Clubber was right about one thing...I'm not long for this place.
