I'm not sure about the first five seconds thing (I don't think that Conan Silviera, Mark Coleman or a few others who've been KO'ed feel that way either). Yes, trapping is a big part of most JKD fighter's repetoire, but it isn't a set formula that a JKD man is forced to follow because if he doesn't he will burn in gung fu hell (if it were so I would be saying hail Bruces right now because my soul would be in serious jeopardy). My goal isn't to trap or clinch or kickbox or grapple or hit with a weapon. My goal is to win as efficiently as possible. A lot of the time that means jabbing them in the eye, jacking up their jaw, kicking them in the nuts, but sometimes it means choking them out or cracking their skull with an improvised weapon. It doesn't have to be one at the expense of the other. BJJ is good, but if it were the all powerful answer then Sak wouldn't have beaten three Gracie brothers. To say that the intercept-blast-HKE formula doesn't work is like saying a passing game doesn't work. It may not against some teams, and if you're going up against a pro NFL team and your experience can be summed up as playing pass in the back yard the chances are that it won't. However, if you're good at it and do it at the right time, your chances for success are greater.

gungfuhero - your last post sums it up perfect. There is no move that is the end all for fighting. If there is, then Ive been waisitng about 10 years of my life studying martial arts. Anything can happen in a fight - every oppenet is different - so one needs to be prepared for all situations. If you say SB's dont work, thats because you never pulled them off. How can you say punching someone if the face 5 times doesn't work? It doesn't have to end the fight to be considered effective - I don't know of any one attack that will always end a fight. If there is such a move please enlighten me. I was always taught to saturate and overwhelm your opponet with strikes and try to beet him in the most efficient manner with whatever tools necessary(be it headbutts, sb, locks, eye gauging, ect...). Every move has a time and a place.

Thanks, Demi!
The subject of the SB comes up a lot in the JKD forums and it is much easier to just point somebody to your article than to re-hash the stuff over and over.
There has been a lot of talk about people having come up with various ways to blast, from a boxing structure, etc. It's great to try and be inventive but there maybe nothing wrong with the SB, it's probably in the delivery. The PFS guys all train to apply it from the killer instinct perspective. The more you work your blast against resistance and against various arts, you'll gain a great understanding of this most formidable tool. Breakout the training gear, give your partner some PCP (just kidding) and let's rock baby!

You'll get taken down trying to straight blast!
You can say this about virtually ANY technique under the sun. You can get taken down while trying to do a takedown! So what's the point?
I GUARANTEE there are people whom you could NOT takedown if they blasted you correctly. Does that mean it's an invincible technique that everyone should use? NO!
If you don't like it/can't make it work, then leave it alone. But bear in mind that when you say it doesn't work, what you're really saying is that it doesn't work for YOU. But that's. . .OK.

Haha... this reminds me of the times, when I was creating my style, when I found the art of Chain Snake Skin... anyone accept me familiar with the concept?
