Well..
Thanks for sharing all that with me, people. To me though.. what you've said is mainly true. But martial arts is a major part of my life.. So.. it's opened me up to not only becoming stronger, healthier, and being a better fighter, but it helped open my mind and become a better person. I can usually keep cool in a fight.. especially in my Tae Kwan Do club.
The ideals, mindsets, etc that Bruce Lee spoke about has an effect on most of your life.. not just fighting, but dealing with problems you come across, views, expressions, and whatever else happens in life. It may surely help you eventually find yourself, if you let it. - "Relationship is understanding. It is a process of self revelation. Relationship is the mirror in which you discover yourself - It is to be related" <-Bruce, Tao of Jeet Kune Do.
Anyways.. This has gone on long enough.. I think it may be easier for me if you all spoke with me in another form.. Such as email.. in which case mine is: jubbo05@hotmail.com ..and my AIM screen name is Warrior Kazuo, if you're interested in speaking with me. So, take care all, later.

I agree with you completely there.
But also remember that people gather such insight from other things as well. I take a lot of what Bruce said to heart, but most of my spirituality comes from Buddhism, religious study, etc.
In the physicality of what a fight is, fists are fists.
It's like what Bruce said. Before i studied the art a punch was just a punch a kick was just a kick. After I studied the art a punch was more than a punch a kick was more than a kick. After I mastered the art a punch is again a punch, a kick is again a kick.
Philosophy plays a big part in martial arts. But the actual physical skills can be performed by people with no philosophy at all. In my opinion the realistic skills WITH philo behind them is the best "path" however. But put emphasis on the "realistic" part...

A man once said that philosophy is just an extended effort to think clearly; sounds pretty important to me.
There are people who "do" martial arts and their are martial artists. Think of the difference between a computer user and a computer scientist. A user knows just enough to function, but a computer scientist knows the hows and the whys. Believe it or not, there would be no JKD if Bruce Lee didn't study the philosophy of martial art. The understanding that the individual exists outside of style is a metaphysical matter. The breakdown of ranges, tools and strategies is episotomelogical. Ideas of functionality, how freedom and simplicity interact, are an example of axiology.

You know in the first couple of posts I foresaw a deep thought provoking commentary that would enlighten me. Instead I saw two people say basically, I am right your wrong; your an idiot, I am smart. This forum has one main purpose to make people think. We are to discuss ideas, situations, and theories to push ourselves to levels in our training yes but mostly in our minds and hopefully make a positive impact on all the negativity in ourselves, each other, and the martial arts world as a whole. That is my opinion. Personally, I see it this way: If one does not see philosophy and training as inter-related, one would not actively post here or any such forum. If we as people take an active role in this and other related forums than we are trying to grow and evolve; for whatever reason does not matter, the fact remains that regardless of how or why we do it or how we rank it in importance we are trying to discuss and learn. Terms that degrade should never enter into it period. Respectfully disagree and that it is to say Value one another and the opinions that come with that. The debate should not be over opinion as much as the way it expressed. If done as adults then grow, learn, and seriously consider Each other opinions. (Might learn a lot that way) as far as what philosophy and spirituality have to with JKD or martial arts as a whole I say read Voo's article on fighting.net Paul Vunak's: "State of the Union. (Part 1 and 2) He has some really good points. Remember this also Bruce encouraged independent thinking and said, "The highest form of martial arts is to honestly express oneself." If we do not value, or consider our (and other people's) own philosophy and mental training how can we express ourselves? Our mind and spiritual beliefs are a huge part of who we are as people; so to express one's self honestly, (in my opinion) we must exercise our minds and develop our own philosophy so that we may know what makes us unique. (In my opinion here again) Only after that can we honestly and openly express ourselves through our training.Last edited by JKDMAN; 03-26-2002, 04:54 AM.

Whoever thinks that Philosophy has nothing to do with martial arts eventually will change his mind. Philosophy has nothing to do with fighting but it has everything to do with Martial arts. I think every style I've read about talks about avoiding the fight. Fighting should be the last resort. Philosophy should be the first resort.

Let go Luke...use the force
I think everyone has brought up good points. But, to each his own I say. Follow your own path. Everyone is free to have his/her own opinion. Obviously you guys disagree, but I hope you two find common ground. I tend to like what Ryu has to say. I guess his path of thinking has meaning for me. Good luck fellas!

What day is it? O-kay what YEAR is it?
Originally posted by Al~QiyaamaI completely agree with you. Have you practised Pentjack Silat? I asked because I have a friend, that I lost contact with, that taught me a little of it for about 5-6 months. I read material and studied it. It is definitely a very effective and deadly art...........
Do you think he's going to respond to you now? This thread was started 4 years ago...
You're a little late for a "silat" man....Attention to details like the date might be a good thing if you don't want to get flamed for ressurecting a dead thread...
