      crap!

if you read tao of jkd properly an if you were a real bruce lee fan you would know that tao of jkd is a bunch of notes that are usefull in martial atrts training to be an effective fighter.

also, it does not say any where in the book that all the notes are bruce lee's quotes.

tha book does say on the very first page ' take what is useful and develop from there'. how the hell are you supposed to develop your skill if your not allowed to research an take notes on useful stuff you find?

an plus if your dissing bruce lee an sayin he knows nothin i would like to see you in a ring with him so we can see how much you know

        Touchy Aren't We?

        jun fan man,

Can I take it that you didn't like my article so far?

First of all, I do consider myself a "real" Bruce Lee fan. I also understand that the "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" is a bunch of notes that's useful to training and some are not. But one of the ideas behind the article is that not everyone does know that.

You are correct in that no where does it say that all the notes are original Bruce Lee quotes. It also does not say anywhere that they are not Bruce Lee's original notes, except for the few acknowledgements at the beginning. But the implication is that the ones that aren't acknowledged are his words. Whether that's intentional or not, I don't know. I don't think it was intentional. My whole point is that it has caused much confusion. Well, that and I find it very interesting where much of the material actually comes from.

There are also many examples that are not from the "Tao", and some that are simply used to show possible origins. In the next part, I will show a possible origin to one of his ranking systems.

In my opinion, it can only give us a greater understanding of the man and what he was all about. I truly hope that in the final part of the article I can clarify this fact. My intention was never to "diss" Bruce Lee.

          jun fan man,

          you said:

"...i would like to see you in a ring with him so we can see how much you know"

I think I could probably take him right now! Especially after being dead for over 30 years. Just don't think he'd put up much of a fight.

            ok fair enough

its not that i dont like the article, it gives us the original source of where bruce lee took his notes from.

the way i read it, it sounds like your making out that bruce lee was just a 'copy cat'.

and as for sparring with bruce himself you know damn well i meant when he was alive

im lookin forward to the next part but becareful the way you word it

Man, what the Bloody hell is your frickin problem?? that wasn't even remotely close to being funny. it was stupid, twisted and pointless. why the hell would you say something like that?? you completely dishonor Bruce Lee's memory by referring to him in such a manner. never, and i mean NEVER dishonor Bruce Lee or his memory like that again. that comment only showed what a disgusting and honorless person you are. what the hell, don't say anything like that again.

Lighten up! My sense of humor may be a little twisted, but dishonoring Bruce Lee??? Come on....

                jun fan man,

Of course I knew what you were talking about. Just trying to lighten up a tense situation... that's all.

How about a BIG group hug now?

Wow. This thread heated up really fast. I'm not an official JKD student, by the way you guys study it, but I do study Lee and use his concepts and ideas.

                        momma news:

I was always under the impression that the Tao of Jeet Kune Do was just a set of notes. I have my own notes that I've taken from classes, books, web sites, etc., so it comes as no suprise to me at all that he has all these notes of other people's works. This idea of adopting other's works, learning from them, and using them to create something new, is a very old one, and I believe that was all Lee was doing. He suceeded, for the most part, except, as you have pointed out, for quoting sources.
From the Tao of Jeet Kune Do

Bruce decided to finish the book in 1971 but his film work kept him from completing it.
What is the last thing you do when you write a paper for school? The works cited page! Lee personally took these notes from books that he read, so does it make sense to say he knew where they all came from, and that he was going to quote these sources appropriately to finish his work? I think so, after all, he did go to college, and I'm sure he knew about borrowing ideas and citing sources.

Bruce Lee did something well that few people can do - he took other people's ideas, assembled them so they made sense, and changed it a little, adding his own ideas. Maybe death caught him in the middle of this process, but whatever he did, he did something different, and he sure did change the world by doing it, so he must've done something right. To criticize the works of a dead man who didn't even have the opportunity to finish his work is wrong! If you're going to write about where Lee got his ideas from, don't do it to show that he borrowed them from other people, but do it so that other people may read the same works that Lee did, including Lee's very own works, so that they may draw conclusion's for themselves, whether they be in accordance with Lee or whether they have changed with the times. Don't try and discredit a good thing, keep it going!

                            mushinmaster

My intent was never to try and discredit Bruce Lee. If it comes across as that way, then it is due to my lack of writing skills, I suppose.

                            mushinmaster,

                            you said,

I was always under the impression that the Tao of Jeet Kune Do was just a set of notes. ..... This idea of adopting other's works, learning from them, and using them to create something new, is a very old one, and I believe that was all Lee was doing.
Which is quite correct. I believe that also. But I'm sure that it is no surprise to you that there are many, many people out there that do not take it this way. Many people think that if it has BL's name on it, it came from him directly. I don't know how many times (myself included) that I have heard people quoting BL and have no idea at all that it actually came from someone else. Now that does not take away the importance of the words or that the idea was communicated to someone else, just that if you knew the source, you may find more gems of wisdom instead of stopping at Bruce Lee.

I do not believe Bruce Lee ever intended on publishing these notes. He may have intended on eventually publishing about his art, but I don't think he would have ever published these copied notes. Hell, you can't fault a man for things published after his death. If there is any fault at all, it is definitely not on Bruce Lee himself.

My objectives with this article was simply to show that many things that are attributed as BL originals are not, and to show some possible sources to other things such as the scene in Enter the Dragon and (coming in the 3rd part) one of his ranking systems. I thought it would be enlightening to many of BL's fans to see where some of these things came from. I know of many, many more instances, but I don't have the time or inclination to pursue it further. The examples in the article are simply ones that I stumbled on myself.

Bruce Lee has influenced my life in many ways. One of the greatest is in my thirst for knowledge through books. With a personal library of over 2,000 books, that inspired me to start my own collection. Although nowhere near BL's, I have a sizeable one now. That is how I stumbled on many of the examples in my article.

Although I have received mostly positive responses on the article, it disturbs me that even a few misinterpret my motives. I hope to clarify this in the last part. Maybe I should have waited and published them as one large piece, but I was eager to share my discoveries with others.

As to my previous remarks being "seriously messed up".... well, I agree. It was about as rediculous as the statement of seeing me in the ring with BL "so we can see how much you know"!

Sorry you don't see the obsurdity of both.
