  • JKd original & JKD PFS techniques

IM not sure which moves are used in the original JKD method and not used in the PFS JKD method and even viceversa. In one of Bruce Lee's Fighting Method books and I see Lee doing some high kicks to the face and groin kicks and eye poking. I've only been to PFS classes like 3 times, one of them was BBJ. And Im hoping that PFS has finger jabbing to the eyes and side kicks to the chest. I also like that Bruce Lee doesnt do all( or no) trapping moves in this book, instead he'll intercept a hook with another hook or with a finger jab to the eyes. In my class I haven't seen groin kicks.I just want to know which moves(or some moves) are used in one concept and not the other. Sifu Lamar just told me that theres no distructing in the org. JKD. Hopefully PFS does have some of these moves...Juan

Most of the PFS stuff is initiated off destructions, but I can't imagine a JKD class of any kind where you wouldn't see eye jabs and low line kicking. As for side kicks, alot of JKD people say that the best use for one is simply for creating space. Of course, Bruce Lee's side kicks (and high kicks) are a little different from the rest of humanity's. What works best for you?

You will learn groin kicks and eye jabs in PFS. You will also learn some nifty things like dumog, destructions, Filipino and Indonesian trapping, Kali/Silat/Muay Thai headbutts, knees, and elbows. You will learn to use blunt and bladed weapons. You will learn BJJ. You will learn select tools from Savate. You will even learn some sickening biting techniques.

The core of the PFS system is simple - inflict pain (usually by destruction or interception), straightblast, trap (if necessary), get the neck (i.e. clinch or plum), finish with headbutts, knees, and elbows. All the other tools are there as back up in case you screw up.

I personally prefer a "teep" from Muay Thai over a side kick as a means of creating space. But that's just me.

I'm a jkd pfs practitioner here in Brooklyn, and yeah, PFS DOES use finger jabs, groin kicks and a lot of other nasty things that the were and are part of original JKD.
I would have to say that each instructor by virtue of personality, and attributes may focus on a different aspect than another. As far as distructions or gunting goes I would say that you dont see it in original JKD....but....It's "there in spirit"
What is a distruction or a gunt anyway? Your opponent throws a punch at you...he intends on landing it....He's got your head in the line of fire.....then BAM! his fist which was intended for your face lands SMACK into an elbow.....In my book, that's a STOP HIT!! it's the exact same concept used as if your opponent was launching a front kick at your groin and all of a sudden...BAM! his shin runs SMACK into your oblique kick. So.... the concept of the distruction IS there.

            Just my observations:

            1. PFS uses a lot of limb destructions (same timing as lin sil die dar in OJKD) and uses the stop hit same as JKD
            2. the stance that Paul Vunak teaches looks more like Thai Boxing to me as opposed to the OJKD Bai Jong which is a little more sideward (like a fencing stance mixed with a boxing stance) and occupies centre line.
            3. PFS punching seems to be more boxing oriented while OJKD is a blend of boxing, fencing and wing chun (non-telegraphic vertical fist lead as opposed to standard boxing jab, etc.)
            4. PFS's RAT is the central theme while OJKD does not necessarily intercept, destroy and clinch. There is a lot more emphasis on ending a fight in middle and long range in OJKD (and leading) as opposed to always looking close doing HKE's
            5. OJKD is weak on the ground (very little ground fighting offensively and practically none defensively) while PFS seems to have incorporated a large amount of BJJ
            6. OJKD has no *formalized weapon work (*although Bruce Lee has been reported to have knowledge in the realm of weapons it is not something he taught so while it may be part of his JKD it is difficult to have a JKD standard for teaching it)

I don't claim to be a PFS expert, but from what I have seen this is what I think.

Destructions could also be found in the concepts of Closest Weapon to the Closest Target (Progressive Weapons Chart) and Progressive Indirect Attack (PIA) and Attack By Combo. (ABC)

Riposte (sp?) and Broken Rhythm also Id say.
