    Aikido

I did Aikido when I was youger for 3 years. Its not a bad style but I would not do it alone, do JKD with it also or something with some striking techniques in it as well. Becaise Aikido involes no striking.

Also the training methods are very poor. Our opponents were taught to co-operate with us. So Im not to sure how effective it would be in a real fight. But I have incorperated some of the techniques into my training.

I'm gonna go watch some classes and I will bring this up and see what is said. I've got to meet with him to talk about private lessons.

        Aikido

You'll see once you get there what type of environment your getting into. Let me know what you think. I'm only going by my personal experience.

Not even Japanese Police (or maybe especially Japanese Police) do Aikido in it original pure Ueshiba form. They put some nice punching in between the moves. Makes things a lot easier.

I wouldn't rely on Aikido only, but it has nice techniques that are very usefull for keeping somebody under control when it is not appropriate to hurt him.

            Depends on the sensei

My brother took aikido for a year and a half. Of course, he is no master or anything close to one, but he told me two things about his dojo that got my thinking on the subject turned around:

            1. His sensei DID use resistance (rare, I understand) as well as explaining street application before and after their "drills", if you want to call them that.

            2. When taught "properly" (read: the way he taught it), most techniques don't actually require that the practitioner retain fine motor control. Grips could be replaced with open palms or cupped hands. In fact, this sensei stressed open hands in the street. He also taught breathing excersises that were supposed to reduce stress in a survival situation.

I showed my brother a few pages from Burton Richardson's JKD Unlimited book, and he said some of the throws are nearly identical, with exception of the strike on entry and such. This was especially true for the Kali-derived techniques.

            I hope this helps you!

              Aikido

That would have to be one of the best Aikido dojo Ive ever read or heard about. Do you know any contact details that could help any one interested in getting a quality teacher.

As for JKD, Im not surprised they took some throws, because they some of them are quite simple and effective. But as a whole I would not recomend it.

                About the aikido dojo

The dojo is in Owensburough, Kentucky. It is the only one in that city, apparently. My brother couldn't remember the sensei's name (he took the class back in '96). It may not be the only one now, but if it is still there it is obviously the oldest.

My brother said he realizes that most dojos don't teach practical applications, but remember that his knowledge is limited. He is not proficient in the higher form of the art (as it might be described) and his memory has faded. He is a civil engineer with a busy life, after all

                Hope this helped!

                    Jkd?

Many of the Filipino systems are quite useful to police work. Try checking out Pekiti Tersia or , Lameco escrima, They train with a weapon to teach the hands fighting skills. Similar to JJ but more realistic on the street.
                    Just my 2 cents
