OK I'll elaborate a little. Spar, find out what you are having trouble with, invent some drills that isolate that skill or weakness so that you can practice it. Practice. Spar some more to see if you have improved. Repeat.

Here are some basic drills and such that helped me out when I started (and still do):

For balance: Stand on one leg! Simple, effective. Train both legs, and kick with the raised legs using different kicks. A holdover from TKD (the early years ) Also, hopping around on one leg and having folks push you around on one leg helps too. When you are standing around in a bus or train (or any moving platform), hold one foot off the ground: this one doesn't improve your balance a whole lot, but hey, it's simple and effortless.

For reaction time: Hold out your hand palm up, and allow your partner to hold his hand palm down a few inches over your hand. Have him try and slap your palm, while you try and make him miss by yanking your hand away. Do slip drills with bag gloves and mouth pieces. Have a partner try to wack your legs with a rattan stick while you try and pull them up faster than he can hit them. Etc., etc., etc.

For economy of motion: Study anatomy and practice your flow drills and trapping drills. Use resistance of a partner so you can feel how your energy must redirect to achieve your objective (the hit) without hyperextension of the joints.

Don't retract your feet on a kick. Use your hips for power the same way you use them for your punches. It's all in angular momentum. This will make your kicks faster and more deceptive, as well as more economical. You can generate great power still without windups and cocking of the legs.

          Oh, and spar

Remember: economical form begets speed, therefore increasing your reaction time.
