For the past few weeks I've had a light pain in my upper left leg. I've had pain like this before and it goes away after a few weeks. Its about two inches below the top of my hip bone toward the right a little. It hurts when I go to lift my leg up towards the front. In addition to my martial arts training I do a High Intensity weight program. Its not a problem really because it doesn't interfere with my workouts except for some power loss is my left front kicks but it is still pretty annoying. My question is what could this pain be? Do I need to do some kind of additional strengthening or stretching exercise to prevent this kind of pain in the future? Any advice you could give me would be great.

For the life of me I can not remember the name of that particular muscle that I think may be the cause of your pain. From the description of the pain location it is a muscle that runs from the abdomen to the upper leg. Do you do sit-ups? That sort of pain can be caused by doing sit-ups. When doing sit-ups the abdominals are only contracting through part of the sit-up movement, the rest of the time they are simply being flexed isometrically while that particular muscle (the one from the abs to the upper leg) actually finishes the upward movement. If you are doing sit-ups, try doing crunches for a while to gove those muscles a rest. They can get overworked from all the sit-ups and from kicking.

It's difficult to give much feedback without more data. You could be over-training on the weights. Alternatively, you could be in need of some better stretching work. Of course, you could be just out of shape and experiencing the normal pain of getting into shape. Difficult to tell without more specific information.
Question: Do you have any prior neurological damage to your siatic nerve? Have you ever had or is there a family history of hip problems? Have you ever received medical attention for a hip problem?

I've never had any problems with my hip before and my family has no history. I've been thinking hard about everything I do and the only thing I can think of is maybe I have been taking my leg lifts a little to hard (but I always try to keep them gentle and fluid).

well try working out alternately. i got my workout from bruce lee. id train my arms monday wednesday and friday and my legs on the alternate days. ill weight train on days i do my legs for 1 hour and run 1 mile on days i do my arms. on sundays its sort of my ''rest day''. i have this weird left glittius maxamus muscle ''pain?'' when i side kick with my right leg, i find it funny, because my right side was really bad especially in martial arts, so i had to trainit twice as often as i did my left, but the right side kick itself is fine and beautifully done with the exception of heigh which my 30 stretching a day helps. but when i retract the leg, my supporting leg which is my left leg at the time hurts in the glittius maxamus region i suppose. so to the question written above linberness is imperitive to proper form and safe martial art practice. if any move comes with pain its not right. also dont do a move you are not physically able to do at that time. i learned from that lol >_<
