Mike,
I use old fashioned boxing headgear most of the time even when I straight blast (more of a boxing blast now) and grapple with more vale tudo rules. This is good, but you can still get injured or injure someone else if you're not careful.
Some really good headgear with face covering, etc. can be found at Rich Dimitri's site. www.senshido.com
Enjoy.

You can get a similar type of foam/plastic face shield set-up from Asian World of Martial Arts. The Lightning head gear and plastic face shield combo won't cost as much as Senshido's. I cannot directly compare the two, but it might be worth a look. The web address is www.awma.com.
Hope this helps.

I use normal boxing headgear with a face shield + the kind of goggles you would normally use in a workshop; they are strapped onto the shield with pieces of shoe laces.
They come cheaply and offer sufficient protection when somebody attacks the eyes.

In all seriousness, the effectiveness of hitting the head is that it then rattles the brain. Of course you can injure the surface of the head also (which the helmet would offer a great deal of protection), but the helmet would offer much less protection against the whole head being slammed about. And its the long term effects of having the brain bumped about that cause the punch drunk syndrome.
I know of some guys who hit the head hard in training. think they're fairly unwise, but do concede that it is effective training (until you stagger about like Muhammed Ali).
