Why train JKD and also train with a gun?
Why train JKD and also train with a knife?
Why train disarming agaist gun or knife?
If you have to ask these questions my question to you is, lnce you had enough luck and enough skill to disarm the gun- or knife-man what do you intend to do with the weapon? Just throw it away or what? What if the guy is not alone. Just fight the next one heroishly with your bare hands? Have fun. Count me out.
I am used to working areas where carrying firearms or other kinds of weapons legally is very restricted. I find it not only important to train disarming, but also train handling different types of weapons so that you can easily decide if the gun is ready to fire or not - use it if necessary - unload it to prevent accidents if the fight is over.
The 0.5 Sec. question: Fine, but a good martial artist does not need 0.5 Sec. to close on you 2 or 3 meters. I know this does not cover more than half of the distance where most shootings take place, but still better than nothing.
Besides, most people cannot shoot and hit that fast.
And 3rd.: Some people seem to think disarming starts where somebody points a gun at you. Conditioning your mind to think this way is bad because your chance are worse than bad. Disarming starts with even noticing from the other guys moves that he will be going for some kind of weapon. It sometimes even starts where you have noticed he has a weapon and he does not know about your intensions, or even your presence.
Will you have to deal with him or just make sure you get away?
Can you position yourself close to (boxing range) him before a situation escalates?
And if you get your hands on his weapon, an if you need it for further action - this is where knowledge about weapon types comes in: If handgun, Revolver or Auto? If auto, double or single action, cocked or not, safety on or of, safety catch or grip safety or even a P8-type of gun, round chambered or not. What amount of recoil to expect if I have to shoot.
With long guns there are similar questions to know the answer to - and you probably have to know the answer to most of the by the first glance.
