  • Tai Chi VS Jeet Kune Do?

(Before I begin, I'd just like to say that I don't want this thread to explode in a flame war about "who's stronger" and all that! I'm just curious that's all!)

Which is far more effective? Jeet Kune Do, or Tai Chi Quan? I'm thinking that JKD is more offensive, and TCQ is far more defensive. Am I right?

If I was to concentrate on pure defence in a fight, which one would be the better alternative?

    Thanks in advance!

Hopefully this won't turn into a clone of all the other Tai Chi threads of late.

You would lose. Action beats reaction and offense wins. Defense gets you laid up in the hospital.

hey ryan - directed at me??

I agree with ryan. Offensive is better.

As for Tai chi, Its an even mix of defence and offense. Yin Yang.

      cheers

Do Tai Chi guys/girls throw attacks of their own then (pre-emptive striking)?

          of course!!

the pre emptive attack statergy of tai chi is quite advanced.

Look at some erle montegue stuff on sudden violence. His dim mak is a bit suspect, but his sudden violence stuff is some of the best around and is tai chi.

If you saw it you wouldnt think it was.

I have got some mpegs, will try to put them online.

          Cheers
          Chris

Tai Chi would win, every time.

Tai Chi doesn't go looking for trouble and does everything it can to avoid trouble by living in harmony with the world.

This may sound like a stupid question, but is it possible to refine Tai Chi in incorporate training drills similar to JKD? The reason I ask such as question is because I began training in Tai Chi for a short period of time along with JKD and found the two to be completely different. I stopped doing Tai Chi because of time constraints, but I also found doing the forms a bit too much (I prefer punching and kicking things )!

In the same way that JKD has gone away from any classical forms, would it be possible to learn how to fight and defend yourself, without the Tai Chi forms?

That would be missing the whole point of the art, which classifies itself as 'internal'.

I've taken some tai chi, and I liked it. Does it 'fight'?..well, I suppose after 15 years it might. But the tai chi practitioners I've met aren't looking to it for fighting, or even self defence.

Tai Chi vs. Jeet Kune Do. Hmmm....that's a tough one. Perhaps I could provide my answer via the following parable:

There are several martial artists in a room together. The lightbulb burns out and needs to be changed. What happens?

                        1. Several people, grouped together loosely as "those kata guys", begin performing strange dances that say will help them develop incredible lightbulb changing abilities...in time.

                        2. The Tai Chi guy says he does not go looking for lightbulbs to change and says he really isn't into it. When chided by the other, he says that everybody else doesn't understand the inner nature of lightbulbs.

                        3. The four JKD guys start to argue about the right way to change a lightbulb and whose heritage gives them the right perspective on it. They never cease to argue and their arguments get more esoteric and irrelevant. They never do manage to change the lightbulb.

                        4. The BJJ and Muay Thai look at each other and nod. The BJJ motions for the Muay Thai guy and says, "This looks like a standup job to me." The Muay Thai guy makes a wai to the BJJ guy, which makes the BJJ snicker (but, heck, a Muay Thai guy will wai a stop sign if it will get him out of a couple of hundred pushups) and changes the lightbulb.

That's one of the better responses to a 'it vs. that' thread I've ever seen. I hate using this but..LOL.

Damn spanky good one! You to Terry.

Okay when I came in to this discussion I was totally expecting to flame tai chi big time. However you guys have been so respectful here I guess I won’t. Damn way to ruin my fun guys.

Honestly though, is tai chi really a martial art? I’ve seen them in the park many times doing slow rhythmic kata type forms. Do they even spar? How can you become a good fighter without fighting? I can do karate kata for 10 hours a day but this wont help me in a tournament. Same with shadow boxing. Not to say kata/ shadow boxing aren’t good for other things.

My answer is JKD because all I’ve ever seen doing tai chi are women and old people.
