Hopefully you would have a JKD instructor with legitimate lineage that can be traced to Bruce Lee. My guess would be that "certification" and/or some type of teaching reference would have to come from your instructor. I've met many martial artists from different backgrounds who really have a bad opinion of JKD because they have seen guys who basically read the T of JKD, attended one Escrima seminar , hung out at a boxing gym or wrestling room for a week and proclaim themselves to be JKD instructors and actually open up a school.

It is scary! You have to be really careful where you train! Without going into any details, I've attended a class where a person wasn't authorised to teach! Let's just say I attended the lessons I paid for and never went back.
I'm not sure what it is like in the US, but in the UK, it is very difficult to find a legitimate JKD school in the area. I think there are only a few people in the UK that are authorised to teach JKD (when compared to the better known arts of karate, judo etc)
I'm lucky enough to live close to a authorised school. Pseudoswitch, you are lucky enough to live in London and can attend Bob Breen's academy.

While I agree that performance is the true test of the martial artist, I do think you need a legit lineage to the art.
Otherwise you're just making things up.
The biggest problem I see in JKD is that all the "liberate yourself from classica dogma" stuff is used incorrectly and is sometimes thought of as "having the permission to do whatever you want and call it JKD."
Structure is not dogma. You need to know what you're doing, you need to have been doing it for a decent amount of time, and you need to have credibility. That means having lineage back to Bruce.

First off, I should say that JKD is not the only art/system that has an array of frauds or "paper tigers" , heck in the U.S. the term "karate" seems to mean a myriad of different things and has had its share of hucksters. With JKD though, you have a slew of Bruce Lee wannabees who interpret his philosophies anyway they want, and don't have a single days worth of instruction from someone with a real JKD background with lineage.
I may be wrong but I don't believe there is any type of JKD governing board. I think Linda Lee Caldwell and some OJKD members got a copyright for "Jun Fan JKD". And I'm sure anyone claiming to teach JKD Concepts would have to have some type of reference/lineage to Dan Inosanto.
