  • Teaching Self (Need Advice)

    Hi there

I am 20 years old in UK, I basicly love martial arts and have since a very little boy. I did a few classes before but my dad drew me out of them as he said they was basicly "shit" sorry for my french.
My dad used to be some good martial artisit I not sure what style or anything but his got alot medals and great photos but he can't teach me due to reasons i dont wanna go into. So I taken it under my teather to teach my self, sorry if anyone disagrees with me but in my situation I find it best and I will work alot harder for it.

    I basicly need some advice.
I been attending gym for about 2yrs now on and off and have a good toned muscler bodie. Monday I do biceps, tuesday is back and traps, wensday is chest, thursday is triceps and friday night off, saturday shoulders. I stoped legs for a while.
I bought Bruce Lees Jeet Kune Do DVD which is cool for information and I bought his TAO of Jeet Kune do.

From what is said already you must gather I want to train in Jeet Kune Do.
Can anyone suggest any other books or dvds/videos I should buy to help me train and equipment?

    Also...

I am reading the Tao of JKD and at the "Training" section.
on Page 27 it has sub title:

    Fitness Program:
    alternate splits
    push ups
    running in place
    shoulder circling
    high kicks
    deep knee bends
    side kick raises
    twisting sit ups
    waist twisting
    leg raises
    forward bends

now thats it all it says of that...
Now should I do like 10 of each or something everynight? or something?
Can someone here at all give me a example plz also some of them I aint sure what they are, I seeked up online for some and got a bit of information but not a great excess how to do them. Are these just good warmups or proper training to do all times?

Also who has the book turn to page 28 and there it has supplementary training... certain things for each day.
I wont type it all but if you have the book your know what I mean.
How many of these do I do per day? also some are weird i not sure what they are...
    jumping jack?
hehe Also are these to be done every week all time?

Could someone help me write a training program of these things, what I should do per day and week or something?

Thats all the questions I have for now, I will carry on reading the book and taking notes and try to write my self a fitness and training program. also any other advice apart from something like "GO TO A MARTIAL ARTS CLASS".
    lol
    THanks

            WazMeister,

I admire your dedication and sympathize with you because at one point, I was very much like you. I started karate when I was very young and my father bought me a copy of the “Tao of Jeet Kune Do.” For several months, I lived and breathed that book. I even quit karate because it was not like JKD! Over the years, I bought so many martial arts books to “recreate” and fill in the gaps for my JKD training. Unfortunately, I realized that I was not Bruce Lee.

Keep in mind that the “Tao of Jeet Kune Do” is NOT a training manual. Bruce Lee did not write it nor did he intend it to be a “how-to” guide for aspiring martial artists. Basically, Bruce worte things down for himself, to help himself train and come to terms with his martial arts. That said, there are invaluable insights to be gained from reading the book. However, as you progress in the martial arts, you will begin to understand that your individuality is much different from Bruce Lee, and far more important.

Now, I’m older and wiser... I’ve done boxing, kickboxing and some submissions. Instead of trying to do what Bruce Lee did, I try to enhance my own abilities. Ofcourse, you only get this far after trial and error. But the point to remember is that you need to develop your abilities based on what you can do.

If you really want to learn JKD concepts, join a respected club or find seminars. Paul Vunak is well regarded for his books, seminars and training videos. Personally, I don’t care about systems or styles, or even concepts for that matter, I simply train. In your case, I can only offer some tidbits on training. I’m a firm believer in the most basic, yet effective martial art — boxing.

            Here’s a start:

Roadwork: Jog often and develop cardio... Roadwork entails jogging and throwing combination punches (however, you can simply jog if you want to avoid harrasment).

            Simple workout:

            Warm-up and stretches

Mirror training: Practive the basic punches: Jab, Right, Left Hook, Uppercut. Watch how you deliver each punch.

Shadow boxing 2-3 rounds of 2-3 minutes each. Practice footwork (advancing, retreating, left and right) throw punching combinations.

Heavy Bag: Your sparring partner without the pain. Practice combos (jab, right , hook - double jab, uppercut, hook, and so on) stick and move. 2-3 rounds of 2-3 minutes. Throw some kicks, elbows and knees later on.

Double-end ball, or speed bag (optional)

            Abdominal work

Explanation of most boxing techniques can be found on this forum... There are also tips on Muay Thai kicks, elbows and combinations. If you’re still intent on following the “Tao of JKD,” develop a way of maximizing your workouts. In other words, try to reach new heights each session.

            Good luck...

Does anyone know of any in UK/Kent prefrebly Medway area?

I been reading up some forms of martial arts, I know there isent a best but what would be more suited for me to move on to jeet kune do from it?

              Kung Fu seems great.

I find the problem with Tao of JKD is it has alot of bruce notes and hard to read txt and the book doesent explain it.....
So it has a section about posture yet it has a scan of his notes and not explainations....

Also, If JKD isnt your cuppa tea, Try Tai Chi, Brilliant for your health but regarded oen of the most dangerous Martial arts when mastered. Ive basically based my life around it, But im going to start Wing Chun before long then slightly progress onto Jeet Kune Do... When i get my driving licsence that is

Ever consider buying some videos or dvd's. The drawings are one thing but seeng the stuff in motion is another thing entirely. Also find a good training partner.

The definitive inosanto collection is a wonderful series of tapes

                          inosanto.com

another set that shows the evolution of jkd is erik paulson's combat submission wrestling. what makes it interesting is that it comes from somone who has had to apply JKD in nhb events.

                          erikpaulson.com

a good training partner is someone you trust. someone who does not suffer from testoterone poisoning.

I am lucky enough to be able to live in a place where I can train with these guys and also have many other qualified jkd and kali instructors in my area.

while we are on the subject...

Personally I feel that you can only effectively train and teach yourself AFTER building up a broad martial arts knowledge directly from good instructors.

the path that you chose takes a lot of courage.
that is why most people will disagree with you.
first of all if you want to study by yourself you must first realize the fact that all the martial arts in the world have the same basic principles. you will achieve this by keeping an open mind and having a lot of imagination. and you also have to realize the main purpose of martial arts which is self-expression. because by expressing yourself you discover things about yourself that can either be be painfull or delightfull. and it is these things that you have to battle in order to achieve an egoless self. this is the main purpose of all martial arts. pity most martial arts forgot this purpose and devoted themselves in specific areas such as health, self defense, competitions, and internal healing. what they dont realize is that all these things are connected with one another. anyway if you want to continue with your prsuit then the best advise i can give you right now is dont let your ego get the best of you and love what youre doing.
