      Personally I feel that you can only effectively train and teach yourself AFTER building up a broad martial arts knowledge directly from good instructors.

      I disagree. Most of my martial skills came from self study using books such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Self Defense Techniques, Hikuta: The Art of Controlled Violence and last, but certainly not least, Mugei Mumei no Jitsu. According to Master Kim I'm an the equivalent of a black belt and twice as dangerous.

      You can reach your dreams, I'm living proof!

        I hear that many of your skills come from self-study.

              I have a feeling self-training is sort of like masturbation. It does the trick but is no substitute for the real thing.

                Admirating comment, true if you lack charisma, self-help, and the ability to accomplish your own goals. What you say is true for most people. They want to kick-ass like bruce lee but dont want to put no time into it. In the end you can only help you helpyourself.

                    I know..we learn to acknowledge our feeling's and then we have a choice(to be conflicted or to not be conflicted!!?) and they are one of 4. Glad, Mad, Sad or Scared.
                    Your piece of,,, father has scared you off of going to a class...he's not letting you grow...he's making you feel stupid(but he's only human i s'pose) about learning the way everyone else learns. Acknowledge these feelings and you will be surprised at the freedom you gain- you will gain the headspace and "don't Give a toss attitude" of it don't matter what I look like, and in fact It lon't look bad at all" so that you can concentrate on what's important- doing what makes you happy.
                    This is awareness("Awareness is the spirit-Attack is the foundation of thought"). Awareness of feeling's and the detrimental effect they can have if not controlled- and that means by being acknowledged and positive action taken rather than suppressed and negative acton taken.
                    Please try this simple Kung Fu secret and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.. when you finally acknowledge, and more AwArE;}
