Stop worshipping Bruce

i dont think he is some kind of god or perfect being or well of wisdom. He was a guy who studied in martial arts and trained allot, and his philosophy on martial art was pretty groundbreaking and in essence is the best thing. There is no best style and system, working with YOURSELF on your own mechanics and abilities and dabbling in different arts is so much more logical then taking one system as the gospel truth. and his actual fighting abilities were so increadible. I dont try to emulate him, i dont wear shirts with his face on them, i just respect him as a pioneer and great martial artist, and i think his philosophy was a good thing for martial arts in general.

not to mention all those people who got in the "kung fu craze" in his movie days did get more into martial arts and it brought more people to it.

in conclusion to my little post here, nobody should call him the god of all martial art or the intelectual of our time, but i think he should rightly be aknowledged for what he stood for, did, and leaves behind. (just like many great men, in the spectrum of martial art or otherwise)

I agree that Bruce should not be worshipped however he was one of the great pioneers. He was in his time one of the greatest MMA fighters around.

The question of whether Bruce Lee could beat ____ in a fight is irrelevant. The only correct answer is “I don’t know” because he’s dead.

But, by any measure of a person’s life as it relates to the person’s passion, Lee is worthy of respect and praise. He was before his time in building a data base of human movement as it relates to hand to hand combat. In my analysis, by the way, he would have certainly added what we currently know about ground fighting from BJJ. Lee’s journey was a personal one as should be yours. As with all concerns you should find your answers by the application of scientific principles–in this bio-mechanics. Then apply your artistic interpretation of these scientific truths–your strategy and unique way of doing things. As Lee said, and it is true, there is no Japanese way of fighting or Chinese. There is no BJJ or Muay Thai for that matter. These arts have simply gathered bio-mechanical scientific truths that exist whether they are discovered or not. That is the Lee message. When I first read Lee’s books I was amazed by the point of view. That is what you get from him.

I do, however, find it sad that people have exploited “Jeet Kune Do” as if it were a style–the exact thing Lee despised. It seems the JKD has become a handy way of filling in a lack of organized martial arts achievement for many (not all of course). On screen Lee was an artist. In practice we are all artists. However, his true contribution was his scientific approach to MA.

I also find it reprehensible to speculate about what a dead person could or could not have done (in the could he "kick ___ butt" sense) now or then.

Bruce should be respected

I think there should be another category on the poll...this being "Do you respect Bruce Lee for what he has done for Martial Arts" I sure admire and respect him and he is one of the true pioneering Chinese action actors and Martial Artist of the 20th century.

What he did for the Hong Kong film industry,Martial Arts in the rest and the chinese people everwhere in the World was an awesome impact. I am a British born Chinese and my Dad always said in the UK no one really knew what Martial Arts was all about ,just Judo and some karate but when Bruce came along it stirred up A GREAT INTEREST and to this day people say: "I started Martial Arts because I watched Bruce Lee."

In terms of JKD its a progression, we will should keep the principles and values of what Bruce Lee set out to do,but learn to evolve ourselves. To be honest I don't any Bruce Lee fanatics,I know some people who quote him but I don't know anyone who would go as far as pushing his life down other peoples throats...I don't see any crackpot religious people with leaflets standing on street corners telling kids to go worship Bruce.

I will end with this,Bruce Lee had a massive impact in the short years he lived,he inspired a generation and the fact that this thread has been viewed 12,826 times since it was first posted in 2003 tells you something doesn't it?
