  • Its kinda funny you mentioned worshipping Bruce because I just so happen to have my What Would Bruce Do? bracelet on.

I respect him and I find that looking at what he accomplished in 33 years can be very motivating. I don't believe half the stuff I've heard or read about him and what he could do, but I don't go out of my way to make threads to bash the people that believe it nor do I say things that have the intention of disrespecting a man that did nothing to me. I'm not naming names but some on this forum seem to find it nessicary. Bruce was good, but he wasn't born that way, anyone can be as good as him if they train as much as he did. Theres no secret to it, train, get better, thats it.

    • Good post I agree I think the bruce bashing and Even JKD bashing is for another forum I wish people would talk and chat more about techniques and training and less about how good bruce is or isnt I mean this the JKD forum i dont think we should bash the guy who helped opend up a new world or MA to us. Lets just chat about JKD and leave the rest behind.

        • How about the 'no bashing' people hijack the thread starting here. What are some good drills or techniques you've seen at your gym? How do you work toward integrating different styles? How much empathis does your school put on physical fitness and general athletiscm?

I suggest ten positive posts, then kill the thread with silence.

remember, no responding whatsoever to the negativists after this point:

          • BRUCE SHARED HIS KNOWLEDGE THRU THE DIFFERENT STUDENTS. Now Bruce has been gone for almost 32 years. His art JKD lives on. And what he shared in idea and training lives on. Bruce though is gone. Yes respect should be given. But training in the JKD method and learning more about your needs Is respect in its own thought. As Bruce never intended to be worshiped copyed or such. He tried to share and hopefully help guide someone to there own self. No more or less. He new each person was different And each had to find there own needs to become better What tools he could use he used. And others had to find there own tool box full of tools. No one will ever be Bruce. But everyone will become what they can do. The modern look at the M/A training today. can possibley be looked at That Bruce may have helped to spark the idea. But the end is in each and every ones method of training exposer Is more often easyer to find in todays vast source of learning. This is great. And I would think that Bruce would be glad in todays research And training methods. If looked at as a guide. He helped set a path. He was but a man. That had a idea and shared that idea. No one to ever worship but perhaps to have learned from. And continue to do so. You and I are both different . You have your way of doing what you do As I And we both may very well being JKD Based in training. But react and do our way. The saying your art is not my art means also each person though trained in the same art. Does that art to there own means and applied motion of doing. Thats to me what really counts here. No worship. just knowledge.

Bruce has quite a few recorded fights. but, correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Bruce lose a championship fight to Chuck Norris? (Don't laugh, Chuckie boy was quite the serious martial artist.)

Bruce never fought chuck for real ,except in the movies.
Inosanto recalled a sparring session in which Bruce sparred Chuck and neutralized everything he did. Same with Lewis. Lewis insists have could have beaten bruce for real, and he is probably correct. If Bruce were 190 or Joe 130, who knows?
As for Chuck, he is reputed to have said
"Bruce could have kicked my Texas Ranger ass."

Bruce Lee was way ahead of his time in terms of the reality of the Martial Arts (of waht's real and what's useless crap.) If he were to fight great fighters of today, how would he fare? He would've gotten his ass whupped. But we need to rationalize that had he know about MMA then what we now know about the reality of martial arts, he would've been a great fighter even by today's standard. Let's say if at his physical peak, we can bring him back and train in a combination of standup and ground, he could be one of the best, if not the best in his weight class and maybe more.

So what I am saying is that No, he should not be worshiped, but yes, he should be respected as one of the pioneers of martial arts in the west and he was way ahead of his time. Just ask, how many of us, or who we know, can say that he/she is way ahead of his/her time right now?
I was about to give input to this thread on Lee but its a waste of time. However, your point of view is clearly recognized...

                              • i do think he was a great martial artist. however, he has become a religion of sorts. with people worshiping him more than they are ttrying to get better themselves. yes he desirves a lot of credit, but not so much as to turn him into a "god".
