Actually Bruce Lee defeated Wong Jak Man who was a chinese martial artist. Wong challenged to fight Bruce for the right to teach non-chinese students and non-traditional methods. Bruce accepted and they agreed to fight in Bruce's dojo. A few people were there including Bruce's wife, his students, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Chuck Norris, etc. Maybe Kareem and Chuck werent there but his wife and others were there for sure.
So they begin to fight. The fight lasted approximatly 3 minutes. It consisted of Wong Jack Ass dancing in circles and even running away from Bruce. Approaching the 3 minute mark, Bruce gets close enough to grab him, he then took him down via trip and put Wong into a strangle after some brief ground and pound. Like a Kesa gatame type position all the way around his neck and choked him.
I saw this on a Bruce Lee documentary. Even if its not completely accurate, one thing's for sure....
WONG JAK MAN GOT COMPLETELY CLOWNED.
Dude, before you start posting crap like this. read the rest of the post. evidence has been given on both sides. and if you look at it historically, Wong had been teaching non-chinos long before Bruce came around. most non-Lee students agree it was a tie.
I don't think Wong won. Read Dan Inosanto's "Jeet Kune Do: The Art and Philosophy of Bruce Lee" for the skinny [although, as I write this, I am not 100% sure if Dan was there...still, I consider him the most reliable of Bruce's biographers].
What happened is that Bruce realized a couple of things:
1) Adherence to set of techniques delayed the fight
2) The fight shouldn't have lasted as long as it did
3) He was winded at the end (need for physical conditioning)
Probably somebody hit these issues way back in the thread, but someone just coming in needs to hear them again anyway.
Why...who...what? Who Jacked Bruce's Man Ass with their Wong?
2) I am an American. I like British people.Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells was a good movie. I like attractive british women alot and will gladly hump them.
3) The banter back and forth about WWII is disrespectful of those that died on all sides.
4)Saying that the American contribution or British contribution was greater detracts from the men and women that gave their lives for all of us. please think before you do these things.
5) Making light of the 9/11 atacks is uncool. Seriously, you wont catch any decent person bagging on those that were killed by an attack of that nature.
6)Yes the Japanese whacked us and we were not prepared. I believe that most can agree that this was dishonorable. That being said honor does not win wars. Neither does fucking with someone that can kick your ass. The Japs made a move and wound up paying for it.
7) I'm gonna lean toward this coming to a draw. I feel id Bruce Lee so convincingly destroyed his opponenet it woudl not have caused such a shift in his behavior. If he did win handily and still made these changes he was most likely suffering from some sort of perfection complex which could have been the case. I don't know. None of us do.
8) If you're going to talk about ANYTHING like this you have to understand we're dealing with things that will never be known and therefore NO ONE can be defninitively correct.
9) If people would like to discuss things of this nature I believe it can be done in a manner that is constructive. This turned into a name calling and clique forming exercise. No point in name calling and shit talking.
just my $.02 BTWo british people use money? or are you using wampum?
A lighthearted reference to an earlier post for those that didn't read this entire thread.
Why do you think so many fighters sought after him to prove they're selves against him? It certainly was not because he was a second rate martial artist.

your logic is skewed. No one said he was a second rate martial artist. I'll be the first to say he was an amazing athlete and a great martial artist.
Furthermore, people flocked to him because he was well known, a household name. if there had been other well known martial artists they would have been challenged just as often, as was common in China. I'm sure there were many challengers to Wong Jak Man too, it's just not as well known because he wasn't as popular and didn't use it to further his image.
Do not front on me son! My statement was to Bruce disbelievers and you do not sound like one of them. So ease up your attitude a bit.
now, no attitude was intended. and I would be considered by most to be a Bruce disbeliever. I thought his biographical movie laughable. and the story of his Wong Jak Mann fight doesn't line up. Furthermore, JKD is far from an original art. as far back as Mushashi teachers were telling their students to study and integrate other arts.

The wong jack mann side of the story doesn't line up at all. And the article that was written to try to sell Wong's side of the story is stuped in bias retoric and disinformation.
and JKD is an original art due to the unique ways it is structured, tools used, philosophy, ect...(Yeah the list can go on) This may come as a shock to you but JKD isn't about just mixing arts.
I know you won't convert to JKD because I have written these things. However I just wanted to tell you that you're wrong.

any story is going to be biased and filled with rhetoric, no way around it. (are referring to the article posted earlier on this thread?) and the baseline of JKD is merely a mixture of previous philosophies. Indeed from what I can get out of Tao of JKD it is less of an art and more of a philosophy, almost everything was taken from some art or another.
What exactly am I wrong about? I haven't said anything that could be proven right or wrong

So yesterday I came upon a four way stop, and as I came to a complete stop there was a car to my right who came to a complete stop before me looking to hang a left. After the car to my right made its turn I then began to proceed forward.
So where is my bias and rhetoric in this story. Since "any story is going to be biased and filled with rhetoric" Yeah, BL did mix philosophies and styles, but after he found what was known to be the best out there and that bettered himself he then melded those methods and ways together to create something unique and alot better/effecient then many other forms of MA.
[MatthewAlphonso:"I would be considered by most to be a Bruce disbeliever."]
Where you are wrong is in your constant denial and down play of what BL did contribute. Such as, how to study MAs for the progression and betterment of the individual, and setting a path of functional methods to help guide MA practitioners to what BL considered the ultimate goal. Functional individual expression of both body and mind in MAs.
