  • Woah, I wasn't bashing Dan Insonato - I was just responding to Fenwick who claimed
'IMO Dan Inosanto is the most important and influential teacher in American martial arts, and he has been for at least 20 years, and he probably would be so if there had been no Bruce Lee. ..'

I was just saying that there are many more important martial artists in the world today.
Dan Insonato is good and I am not taking anything away from him but if you're going to say that someone is that good, you should be able to back it up

Kevin Chan is also good, but I would never dream of saying he is the best in the world. I certainly feel that he has given me more than any other teacher I have trained under and that I think that he is one of the most underrated martial artists around.

And yes it was a world poll. But polls aren't always correct.

    • In all fairness he didn't say the world. He said America.

      • Yeah and I stated that. But that is a big claim

Ask anyone in the world who they know in martial arts and Dan Insonato will be very down th list!!

        • Pretty much everyone serious about martial arts, particularly the FMAs knows about Dan Inosanto in the states.

          • My CKD instructor who has been training for 30 years plus hasn't heard of him!!!

I was talking about people who don't do martial arts as well.

who the **** are you? Guro Dan Inosanto has probably done more for advancing martial arts than anybody else in the past century... Your CKD instructor??? And who, may I ask, is he?

Yeah, maybe fuckers who don't know the difference between kung fu and karate. Those assholes would definitely cite Bruce Lee, Jakie Chan, Sammo fuckin' Hung, Stephen Segall, and the rest as top martial artists.

                  That sounds mighty fishy.

                    Dan Inosanto isn't that great?

My God, Red Rum...he's an extremely gifted martial artist and teacher, especially skilled in the blade arts.

                    Dan's a killer too.

I think he served in the US Army's 82nd airborne division (or was it 101st?) after enlisting in 1959.

From what you've told us, it seems like your Sifu is doing alot for wing chun - making training alive and filling in gaps in the grappling range. That's awesome! Perhaps Chan is a higher rank in the art of wingchun compared to Inosanto...But you've got to give respect where its due.

Inosanto has made many, many contributions to the martial arts world. And so what if he studied under Bruce? Chances are your sifu studied from someone too. Experienced, talented martial artists and instructors are made - not born.

Again that's in your opinion. Many boxers, BJJ guys have never heard of the guy. And I am sure there are even JKD guys who haven't heard of him.

Many wing chun guys I know have never heard of William Cheung or even Yip Man. Some people just don't care

If you want the name of my CKD instructor, private email me.

Do me a quick favour. Ask around your office, workplace who Dan Insonato is. Then ask who Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jet Li are. Compare the results.

As I made clear, I wasn't sayimng that Insonato was rubbish, I was just saying that some of the original posts put him on a pedestal. I was just saying that there are much better guys out there and it is a big statement to say that someone is the most influential person in the USA/world, whatever.

This is a JKD forum so there is a little bias....

But it is like me going onto the wing chun/Chinese arts forum and claiming that Wiliam Cheung is the most influential wing chun teacher in the USA

I could show you some videos of Dan Inosanto in action but you claim you can't see them. . . .

                            • I have videos of Insonato. But I have just seen better.

I'm not disputing that Insonato isn't a good martial artist. I am just saying that he isn't that influential, compared to the many more influences that have come from America. Maybe from a JKD perspective he has given you guys a lot - although considering the title of this post I wouldn't hold out hope that many JKD guys respect him, especially if JKD guys are slating its own founder!!!

Why am I backpeddling? So far no-one has really given me any reason to doubt my statements. I have done 20 years of martial arts without having much to do with Insonato. He has not influenced me or any of my students.

LOL...well, I could just as easily ask if anyone knows Gustav Holst, Wynton Marsalis and Britney Spears. Chances are they only recognize Spears as a musician - despite the fact that the previous two names are very, very highly revered musicians.

Popularity is a nice and good thing, but its not a reflection of talent per se. Whether Inosanto is popular or not doesn't reflect on his contribution to the fighting arts or ability.

Red, its good to have a wing chunner, like yourself on board. Keep in mind that there are MA-ists that maybe few have heard of whom are highly skilled. Most have never heard of Chan before, so this is a new and interesting find.
